Amtrak officials and developers faced off against angry community members Thursday, opposing construction plans for a massive rail yard in Chinatown, Bridgeport and Armour Square beginning as early as the end of this year.

The plan, headed by White Sox minority owner Justin Ishbia’s company, Canal Edge LLC, includes a proposal for the Sox to play at a mixed-use facility along the Chicago River called The Railyards in the South Loop and Amtrak’s maintenance facility to move into the neighborhood on South Canal Street between West 33rd and 35th streets.

Justin Ishbia’s vision to create a new home for the Chicago White Sox hinges on an increasingly thorny question: What will become of its current one?

The team and its billionaire owner-in-waiting aren’t formally obligated to answer that once their lease at the state-owned ballpark ends after the 2029 season.

But Ishbia’s push to help Amtrak build a new maintenance facility next to Rate Field — and eventually put a new stadium on the South Loop rail yard it would replace — is forcing the issue into public discourse sooner than expected.

He now faces intense resistance to the potential Amtrak facility from neighborhood officials and residents worried they’re about to trade a professional baseball team and key economic engine for an unsightly, industrial nuisance.

Leaving behind an empty, taxpayer-funded stadium on the South Side with outstanding debt would be an awkward outcome for a developer needing zoning and permit approvals to realize that ambitious vision. That makes the future of a 35-year-old ballpark and the 80 acres on which it sits fertile ground for negotiating how to mitigate the rail facility’s impact and establish the stadium’s next chapter.

• Johnson told his chiefs of departments Monday that he is NOT running again. Announcing his intention next week and throwing his vote behind Alexi. Alexi will be with him at the press conference.

He polling as low as he ever has so this isn't a real surprise. Porkulous himself has refused to appear at public events with Conehead, he's that toxic.

But....

If Giannoulias is actually appearing with him for this announcement, does Conehead become an anchor around his campaign? Why would he appear with, let alone accept the endorsement of  the lowest polling mayor in history? Someone who is (A) a failure, (B) has zero accomplishments to his career and (C) is known as the tool of the CTU which has lost nearly as much support as mayor dumbass.
