SSA TAX MEETING TONIGHT

Protect Mt. Greenwood
Ald. O'Shea is having a meeting of all concerned residents tonight at St. Xavier U. McGuire Hall. 6:00 PM.

His proposal is for a real estate tax surcharge on all of the commercial and residential real estate on 111th St from Sacremento to Central Park and north on Kedzie to 110th St. The surcharge will be be about 8% during the first year but can go as high as 25% during following years.  The average Chicago SSA charges about 17% per year.

The money is going to be used for the "beautification" of  111th and Kedzie.

If you are concerned that this new tax may put additional strain upon the small businesses that line 111th st, you are right. Their very existence could hinge upon this tax. If you care about 111th st, be at this meeting and ask questions and demand answers.

  2. The Mt. Greenwood Local Redevelopment Corp. has proposed a SSA for 111th Street between Sacramento and Drake on the North side of the street and Sacramento and Central Park on the South side of the street. Doesn't come from O'Shea. Also, this can be voted down by any residents within the proposed boundaries.

I don't care what you say Matt. This is an incredibly anti-small-business initiative. The result of this will be more vacant stores. And it will be Matt's fault.

Western Ave really is a testament to what can happen when you let government run things unchecked.

Not fair to blame Matt for all of this. Much of it was inherited.

Much of what was inherited? Matt was working for Ginger so he was right there for anything that did or did not happen. This is the same post that goes out every so often when Matt is being criticized. This blog is about what is GOING or not GOING to happen with residents taxes. If it happens NOW he is to blame...sounds just like Obama's pathetic re-election plan. I know he was looking for a new slogan but I think he already has one...
      "It's not my fault"

Yeah, your right, its not Matt's fault, it's George Bush!

    3. If it's able to be voted on by residents, which it is, how is it O'Shea's fault, whether he is or isn't on the Board? It becomes the fault of Mt. Greenwood residents if it's enacted.

Matt............new playbook now..................do you really want to be the guy that drove small business out of Mount Greenwood.

  14. Nobody thinks that Alderman O'Shea is actually anti-business. Nobody doubts the sincerity of his committment to our neighborhood. That being said, there is a feeling on 111th Street that he has been somewhat hostile toward the Mt. Greenwood Chamber of Commerce. That feeling combined with the SSA proposal is counterproductive.

I think a better approach would be for the Alderman to walk into these small shops and have a cup of coffee with the owners. Explain to them what you are trying to accomplish and how you would like to do it. Maybe there is a workable alternative to the SSA out there.

See how Chicago politics is so similar to the Godfather movies:

      VITO CORLEONE

We've known each other many years, but this is the first time you came to me for counsel, for help. I can't remember the last time that you invited me to your house for a cup of coffee, even though my wife is godmother to your only child. But let's be frank here: you never wanted my friendship. And uh, you were afraid to be in my debt.

      BONASERA

I didn't want to get into trouble.

      VITO CORLEONE

I understand. You found paradise in America, had a good trade, made a good living. The police protected you; and there were courts of law. And you didn't need a friend of me. But uh, now you come to me and you say -- "Don Corleone give me justice." -- But you don't ask with respect. You don't offer friendship. You don't even think to call me Godfather. Instead, you come into my house on the day my daughter is to be married, and you uh ask me to do murder, for money.

      BONASERA

      I ask you for justice.

      VITO CORLEONE

That is not justice; your daughter is still alive.

      BONASERA

Then they can suffer then, as she suffers.

      (then)

How much shall I pay you?

VITO CORLEONE (stands, turning his back toward Bonasera)

I'll send my patronage chief over to your house next week, He'll drop off some tickets for my fundraiser at the Beverly Arts Center, When you scrape the money together drop it off on Monday nights after 7:00pm. at the ward office.

  15. Again, Leadership is what is needed. You are exactly correct here. This man needs to talk directly to these business owners. Listening is the key. He has to remember that he works FOR the people. Now that is exactly what he has to do. Listen.......
