Flooding

There have been hundreds of flooded basements throughout the neighborhood again this summer. It's a problem which first became apparent during the summer of 2010. The cause of the flooding seems to be a mystery.

There has been extensive flooding in the areas around, Kennedy Park, 99th & Longwood, 104th & Hamlin, 108th & Rockwell and 113th and Central Park. What is going on? I can understand city officials being hesitant to talk about it for fear of creating liability, but this situation needs to be addressed.

Are there any present or former city employees out there with some knowledge as to what the cause of the problem could be? Would you please share your opinion. Thank You.

could it because of the relining of the sewers that was done in the last few years

I used to work for a local agency and know a little bit about this. Much of the flooding is being caused by the installation of restrictor pipes in the sewers. What was formerly a 4 inch drain is now a 2 inch drain. the thinking was why flood out the deep tunnel when you can park some of this water on the steet. The problems start when the 2 inch drain gets obstructed with leaves and debris.

The other thing they did was the installing of a duckbill valve in the sewer lines. Its a valve which wont open until there is a certain amout of presure in back of it. You can tell if its a duckbill valve if the sreets are flooded for a half hour or so and all of a sudden the water goes down in a minute or 2. I know that a few of these valves were installed in the hood but I dont know where.

The previous post may be true, but the flooding is bad everywhere. Two weeks ago the north side got nailed, and that includes the suburbs there also. We've had record-breaking rain in our region.

i know we have had record breaking rain but we have heavy rain every few years and my basement has never ever flooded before this. something is different to cause this.

On 108th & Campbell, the middle of the block floods every time there is a heavy rain. This has been ongoing since I can remember in the early 1960's. The same 3 or 4 houses in the middle of the block always flood. The city says disconnect the downspouts and get rain barrels. I say stop running from the problem and replace the sewer main in the street. Relining is useless, it doesn't increase capacity. The city replaced the sewer main on 108th & Artesian some years back to correct a flooding problem on that block. They tied that line into the large main that runs from 109th & Campbell to Maplewood at 109th then North on Maplewood to 106th. FIX THE MAIN SEWER LINE!!!

A DUCKBILL VALVE WAS INSTALLED AT THE CORNER OF 108 AND TALMAN DURING 2009. THAT VALVE WENT ACTIVE DURING 2010. THAT MAY EXPLAIN THE FLOODING ON ROCKWELL.

I have heard that large sections of the deep tunnel project are unused and may never be used because they can't get an all clear from the epa. Methane probs.
