I cruised to Haiti during the 1970s and went into shock upon arrival when children were begging for money and food. Adults were cooking their food in the streets on the nasty ground, adult men were sleeping in trees, lots of people lived in huts on the dirty ground with no sanitation nor electricity, and people wore filthy clothes and looked primitive. We were sprayed with chemicals upon returning to the ship to prevent contamination and ordered not to bring any items from the island onto the ship.
I was criticized by Haitian employees on the ship because of expressing the shock of living conditions and children begging tourists instead of attending schools, and was told that Americans were materialistic and very unhappy while Haitians enjoyed their lifestyle of relaxation and simple living. They criticized us for giving the children money that they did not need because they were not materialistic. I thanked God for getting that ship out of Haiti and vowed to never return. I also kissed the ground when I stepped on the American soil.
Americans need to visit foreign countries to obtain a better understanding of how people live and what they value in order to have better relationships.
