China: Pelosi Trip to Taiwan a Provocation

If Pelosi postpones or cancels the visit, it will be seen as a U.S. climb-down in the face of Chinese indignation and protest, and an affront to our friends in Taiwan… Either way, relations between our countries will likely suffer, and perhaps seriously, if the Chinese opt for a military response to a Pelosi visit.

When Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi added to the itinerary of a valedictory trip through Asia the island of Taiwan, she could not have been oblivious to the reaction she would produce in a stunned Beijing.

Thus, when the Financial Times revealed that the speaker would be visiting Taiwan, which China regards as a breakaway province, an enraged Beijing took the Pelosi visit to be a deliberate U.S. provocation.

Beijing’s reaction appears authentic and understandable.

“If the U.S. insists on going its own way, China will take firm and forceful measures to firmly safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” a Chinese spokesman told reporters in Beijing. “The U.S. must bear all the consequence of the visit.”

Privately, Beijing is said to be issuing more pointed and serious warnings, which involve military action.

Pelosi apparently did not coordinate or clear the visit to Taiwan with the White House or Defense Department. Wednesday, President Joe Biden told reporters: “The military thinks it’s not a good idea right now” for Pelosi to travel to Taiwan.

So where do we stand?

China is promising serious retaliation if the highest U.S. official since Speaker Newt Gingrich in 1997 flies to Taiwan.

The Biden administration is putting out word that it does not believe that a Pelosi visit to Taiwan is a wise move, when the Chinese Communist Party is on the eve of a conference to decide on a third five-year term for President Xi Jinping.

If Pelosi postpones or cancels the visit, it will be seen as a U.S. climb-down in the face of Chinese indignation and protest, and an affront to our friends in Taiwan.

Around the Asia-Pacific rim, the word will be, “The Americans, faced with China’s firmness, backed down.”

But if the visit goes forward, China is publicly committed to respond. Either way, relations between our countries will likely suffer, and perhaps seriously, if the Chinese opt for a military response to a Pelosi visit.

However this collision plays out, the U.S. is paying the price for having adopted, decades ago, a policy of building up China in the hope and expectation that Beijing would evolve into a benign and friendly rival and competitor of the United States.

Granted most-favored-nation trade status by the U.S., which also ushered it into the World Trade Organization, China has moved, since the turn of the century, from a country with an economy smaller than Italy’s into a manufacturing monolith that is the rival of the United States.

Though China’s navy is less powerful than the U.S. Navy, it is now larger in the number of ships it deploys.

Strategically, China has moved to claim 90% of the South China Sea, the Paracel and Spratly island chains, and most of the rocks and reefs in the territorial waters of Vietnam, Malaysia, Brunei, the Philippines and Taiwan. Some of these rocks and reefs have been converted by China into fortified air and naval bases.

China not only claims Taiwan, and the Taiwan Strait as territorial waters; it claims the Senkaku Islands, occupied and claimed by Japan.

In 1972, U.S. President Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, in Peking, seemed to concede China’s claim to Taiwan in the Shanghai Communique that came out of that historic summit:

“The United States acknowledges that all Chinese on either side of the Taiwan Strait maintain there is but one China and that Taiwan is a part of China. The United States Government does not challenge that position. It reaffirms its interest in a peaceful settlement of the Taiwan question by the Chinese themselves.

“With this prospect in mind, it affirms the ultimate objective of the withdrawal of all U.S. forces and military installations from Taiwan. In the meantime, it will progressively reduce its forces and military installations on Taiwan as the tension in the area diminishes.”

In 1979, President Jimmy Carter broke relations with the Republic of China on Taiwan, recognized Communist China and abrogated the mutual security treaty with Taipei dating to 1954.

For the last three decades, the importation of Chinese-made goods by the United States and the transfer of U.S. manufacturing to China to take advantage of the low wages and productive labor force have led to many trillions of dollars in successive China trade surpluses with us and the rapid emergence of China as an Asian superpower.

Lately, Beijing’s military has made repeated incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone and has had a growing number of encounters with the U.S. Navy and Air Force planes in the South China Sea.

Meanwhile, Biden has said the U.S. will fight to defend our ally, the Philippines, if a collision occurs in the South China Sea. We will fight to defend the Senkakus alongside our ally Japan. And, though his staff has sought to walk it back, Biden has said we will fight to defend Taiwan.

A U.S.-China collision somewhere in the Western Pacific appears inevitable. The only questions are when and where.

Former Illinois Governor Pat Quinn said Tuesday he will decide by the end of summer whether to join the crowded field of candidates seeking to deny Mayor Lori Lightfoot a second term. But it sure sounds like he’s in.

“I served as governor for six years at a very difficult time for our state. [Rod] Blagojevich was removed from office. The national economy was really going in the ditch. Our state budget was a mess,” Quinn told the Sun-Times.

Liberals are very good at chasing rich people out of their states.
Blue states lose billions of tax dollars and many tens of thousands of jobs as a result of the migration of rich people leaving high-tax and high-crime states. It seems to happen nearly every day.
Consider Elon Musk. He left California for Texas. He paid $11 billion in federal taxes last year, and the state of California will likely lose billions in tax revenues in his absence — and that doesn’t include all the property and sales taxes that his Tesla employees will now pay in Texas rather than the Golden State. Texas has no state income tax, of course.

China Issues Private Warnings to US on Pelosi’s Taiwan Trip

China Issues Private Warnings to US on Pelosi’s Taiwan Trip: FT

(Bloomberg) -- China issued strong private warnings to the US government about a planned trip to Taiwan by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, which included a possible military response, the Financial Times reported.

China’s foreign ministry earlier this week officially vowed to take a “resolute and strong” response to any Taiwan visit by Pelosi, which was reported to be next month. Her trip would be the first by a House speaker to Taipei since 1997.

Don't be mislead, the Party for Socialism and Liberation hates the police, regardless of the facts

Paid protesters express outrage after Chicago cop receives 20-day suspension for killing Anthony Alvarez “This sets a dangerous precedent for all past and future victims of police brutality,” said Candice Choo-Kang, with the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

Carrying signs and chanting for justice, about 20 people gathered Friday evening to express their outrage over the killing of Anthony Alvarez, who was fatally shot by a Chicago police officer last year.

The group was also protesting the recent Chicago Police Board decision to suspend officer Evan Solano for 20 days for shooting Alvarez during a foot chase. Supt. David Brown beat back a recommendation from the Civilian Office of Police Accountability that sought Solano’s dismissal.

“I want justice for my son,” said Veronica Alvarez, holding back tears as she spoke at the protest. “Where is the justice?”

“Yesterday’s decision is a disgrace,” said Candice Choo-Kang, with the Party for Socialism and Liberation. “This sets a dangerous precedent for all past and future victims of police brutality.”

The group gathered outside the Thompson Center and carried signs reading “Justice for Anthony” and “Indict Convict Jail Evan Solano.”

Solano fired five shots as he pursued Alvarez on foot through the Portage Park neighborhood early March 31, 2021, striking the 22-year-old in the back and thigh. Solano’s case was the first to be heard by the Chicago Police Board.

COPA held that Solano broke six departmental rules, including disregarding his foot pursuit training and violating a general use of force order.

“This is a slap on the wrist for Evan Solano and a slap in the face for Anthony’s family - and to all those who have poured out into the streets demanding justice and real change from this violent, racist system,” said Jared Mitchell, also with the Party for Socialism and Liberation.

From the Thompson Center, the group marched down Clark Street to the Cook County office building and taped flyers on planter boxes outside the building.

Some flyers were “wanted” signs for Evan Solano, others read “Justice for Anthony.”

The Party for Socialism and Liberation is a communist inspired hate organization. They could give two shits about Anthony.

O’Shea won’t reprise 2019 endorsement of Lightfoot: ‘I’d have a civil war on my hands’
Four years ago, candidate Lori Lightfoot got a huge boost from Ald. Matt O’Shea’s endorsement in the mayoral runoff election against Toni Preckwinkle. It won’t happen this year, O’Shea told the Sun-Times on Thursday.

Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th) at a Chicago City Council meeting in October 2021.

Ald. Matt O’Shea (19th), whose endorsement of candidate Lori Lightfoot in the 2019 runoff election was pivotal to her landslide victory, said Thursday he will make no mayoral endorsement this time because he’d “have a civil war on my hands” if he backed Lightfoot again.

“The senseless violence is so pervasive across the city. And for people to say things like, ‘Murders are down’ [is insulting]. We’re a world-class city. I don’t know if we are anymore based on where we’re headed,” O’Shea said.

It Is Only a Nano-second to Armageddon

It Is Only a Nano-second to Armageddon

Paul Craig Roberts

The U.S. Government’s “Nuclear Primacy” meta-strategy says that there are “acceptable” levels of destruction of America in a nuclear war against Russia and/or China, so long as America “comes out on top” globally, at the end.

Brian Berletic walks us through the Rand Corporation’s plan for the Pentagon to attack China during the narrow window until 2025 and perhaps 2030 (3 to 8 years from today) when the US is assumed to still have superiority capable of winning a war that is “unlikely” (undefined and little more than a wishful assumption) to go nuclear.  In other words, the assumption on which Washington’s planned  military attack on China rests is that China will accept defeat rather than use nuclear weapons.

Would a sane government start a war on such a risky assumption?

There are two other highly risky assumptions in the Pentagon’s war plans.  One is that the US can dominate the seas from which via airplanes or missiles the US can cause destruction to Chinese industry and social infrastructure.  Apparently no attention has been paid to long-range Chinese missiles that make US carrier fleets obsolete.

There is no defending this

(CNS News) -- A new poll of likely Catholic voters found that 82% of Catholics support ending abortion it outright “or imposing various regulations to limit it….” Also, a majority of Catholics polled oppose pro-transgender policy in regard to their children’s sports teams and school bathrooms. Further, a majority of Catholics say they disapprove of President Joe Biden’s job as president.

EWTN News and RealClear Opinion Research released the poll, which is the first in a new series of surveys looking at American Catholics’ voting habits, policy views, and devotional practices. The survey of 1,757 likely Catholic voters was conducted June 15-23.

The poll, which was conducted prior to the Supreme Court overturning Roe V. Wade on June 24, revealed that a plurality (47%-42%) of Catholic voters believed the court should uphold Roe v. Wade. However, oddly, “a solid majority (82%) supported ending abortion outright or imposing various regulations to limit it,” said EWTN/Real Clear Opinion.

On abortion specifically, only 18% said they believed the procedure should be available to a woman at any time during her pregnancy, and only 9% percent of Catholics said “abortion should never be permitted under any circumstance.”

In between, 24% said abortion should be allowed “only during the first three months of a pregnancy,” and 32% of likely Catholic voters said abortion should be allowed “only in cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the woman.” Another 9% said abortion should be permitted “only to save the life of the woman.”

Is a US-Russia War Becoming Inevitable?

If Putin makes a military move into Finland, the U.S. will go to war against the world’s largest nation with an arsenal of between 4,500 and 6,000 battlefield and strategic nuclear weapons… To go to war with the Soviet Union over the preservation of Finnish territory would have been seen as madness during the Cold War.

At the NATO summit in Madrid, Finland was invited to join the alliance. What does this mean for Finland?

If Russian President Vladimir Putin breaches the 830-mile Finnish border, the United States will rise to Helsinki’s defense and fight Russia on Finland’s side.

What does Finland’s membership in NATO mean for America?
