Cook County "Soda Pop" Tax

It's for your health
A tax on sugary drinks that goes into effect on July 1. Every consumable liquid that contains sugar or an artificial sweetener is subject to this tax. Includes:
  • Soft Drinks
  • Fruit Juice
  • Energy Drinks
  • Flavored Milk
  • Milkshakes/Malts
  • Mixed alcoholic drinks
  • Popsicles
  • Certain types of medicine
In addition to the tax, the 40 page ordinance goes to great length to mandate that manufacturers, processors, wholesalers and retailers; are not to itemize the tax in the sales transactions. Instead, they are required to include the tax in the sale price of the item. In fact, it will be illegal for a retailer to refer to the tax in "specific or nonspecific" terms.

Yes people. This is modern America. This is what we have become. If you can't take care of your health, the government will do it for you. (Think what you want but don't think it's about the money).

I don't know who our representative on the Cook County Board is, but did he or she vote for this tax?

And rightfully so. Daley has lots of patronage in Cook County. 300 jobs. Friends, relatives, neighbors, everyone

Wholesalers and retailers ought to, instead of itemizing the tax in sales transactions, they should put the name of their county commissioner or state rep that voted for this outrageous money grabbing assault on the consumer. Isn't the 12% sales tax on the total amount of your purchase enough?

      Brilliant!
Or pass out a flyer with every purchase, encouraging the customer to call Preckwinkle and Daley to express their feelings.

You poor bastards that are forced to live in the city because of residency laws deserve this, as way to many of you are politically connected to your government job.
Many of you would be ringing my door bell asking me to vote for your candidate, as someone who works in the private sector it was sickening to watch you whore yourself out like that for a job. Best two decisions I made were not to work for the city and move out of Illinois, enjoy your failing pension and the higher taxes you brought on yourselves.

You put it in a very mean spirited way.
