Against my better judgement for fear of ruining the Thanksgiving holiday, I turned on the news to see a recap of last nights fun in the park. Of particular note was the obese female p.o.s. who was ripping the Christmas lights off the tree in Daley plaza. I called the Shedd Aquarium to make sure the Beluga whales were still there.
And here's the phrasing I've seen in Chicago media about this protest, "The protesters are demonstrating on Michigan Avenue to "Honor the Memory of LaQuan McDonald"".
Ok, "Honor", honor what? being on PCP? Slashing tires of police cars? What other memories of this "honor student" are out there. The Tribune is still carrying the Annie Sweeney story about "He was turning his life around" in the last 4 weeks of his life. For Christ sake, knock it off. He was high when he died. He was carrying a knife he used to slash tires. Would you let this guy babysit your kids? Didn't think so. Fucking media.
With all this attention about racism, and the broadcast outlets feeding the frenzy, has anyone ever suggested that programming like Maury Povich or Jerry Springer exploit the lowest form of racial stereotyping? Maury has gotten more mileage out of "who's your daddy" and polygraphing African American males to determine their fidelity to their wives and their in-laws? Where's the outrage over that? The Tribune company, the champion of "he was just turning his life around" storylines owns Channel 9 which broadcasts this crap. Phoney money grubbing bastards.
In my opinion he deserved the first 3 or 4 shots. Deadly force was justified. The subsequent shots may or may not have been excessive but they weren't murder or manslaughter. The culprit was already dead.
Since 99% of us have never had a crazy, high on PCP, knife-wielding maniac running at you in the street, it's safe to say none of us know how we would react. Tunnel vision most likely kicked in with this officer. I have spoken with other officers that have fired their weapons in the line of duty before in fear of their lives. Every single one of them had the same answer when asked how many shots did they fire. "I don't know." No one can say how they would react in that situation. We should not judge this man this harshly. Officer Van Dyck didn't force this kid to do the things he did that night.
And no one knows what that young man was going through when he was murdered. He was running, then skipping, then walking. The cop is supposedly an educated, trained individual who should know when his life is being threatened - it wasn't. None of the other police fired and if you're that afraid you're in the wrong line of work. We must stop making excuses for thugs with badges regardless of color. If you're so out of control that you don't know how many times you've shot your weapon or when danger is no longer present how can you serve and protect the citizens? Determining how many shots were deserved shows an attitude of judge and jury. Mass murderers don't get shot sixteen times - they are taken for a burger prior to going to jail. America will be judged for our ongoing crimes against our citizens. Van Dyke will be tried for what he did and thank God it was videoed.
