"Dems have a voracious appetite for more taxes"

The Dems used to be the party that cared about us. Somehow that has changed. Now they just want the money.
(CBS News) The debate over taxes on Capitol Hill "is over," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., insisted today on "Face the Nation," adding that House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's, D-Calif., suggestion otherwise "underscores the voracious appetite for more taxes on the other side."

With a deal reached on the first of the year to avert the so-called "fiscal cliff," extending the Bush-era tax cuts for individuals earning less than $400,000 a year and couples making less than $450,000 a year, McConnell said, "the tax issue is over. We resolved that a few days ago."

Pelosi, who appeared on the program immediately before McConnell, argued the "cliff" package did not offer enough in terms of revenue, but implied that closing loopholes and deductions in the tax code was a more likely course going forward. Though McConnell agreed tax reform is "a good idea," he added, "now that we have resolved the revenue issue, tax reform ought to be revenue-neutral."

"Now it's time to pivot to the single biggest threat to our country, both in the short-term and the long-term... and that's reducing spending," McConnell said. "We now have a debt of $16.4 trillion. That's as big as our economy. That alone makes us look a lot like Greece. We have an incredible spending addiction. This administration has driven spending as a percentage of our economy from 21 percent up to almost 25 percent."

Asked if he agrees with Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, who in a Houston Chronicle op-ed Saturday said the GOP should be prepared to shut down parts of the government if they can't get to where they want to be on spending cuts in the coming negotiations over raising the debt ceiling, McConnell said "it shouldn't require doing any of these things," but indicated that if it comes to that, President Obama is to blame.

"We have a few opportunities here in the next few months presented to us by his request to raise the debt ceiling, by the sequester kicking in two months from now, by the continuing resolution to operate the government - plenty of opportunities to generate that discussion," he said. "But what's really disappointing to me is that the president isn't generating that discussion on his own; that he has to sort of be dragged kicking and screaming to the table when we have these other big issues like the debt ceiling to get him to talk about it. I wish he'd lead."

McConnell wouldn't go as far as to commit to the level of cuts being pushed by House Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio - one dollar in spending reductions for every one dollar the debt ceiling is raised - but indicated such a demand could be used as "leverage" by Republicans.

"If the president won't lead us here, in the direction of reducing this massive spending addiction that we have," McConnell said, "then we have to use whatever leverage we have. And there are some examples of leverage coming along - the debt ceiling is one of them. That hopefully would get the president engaged, even though he seems unwilling to do it on his own."

As for other top-priority legislation, such as a review of gun laws and treatment for the mentally ill - issues Mr. Obama assured Americans after the tragedy in Newtown, Conn., would be handled immediately following his inauguration later this month - McConnell said it may fall to the backburner amid the continuing budget debates.

"Clearly we will not be addressing that issue early, because spending and debt are going to dominate the first three months," McConnell said. But when Vice President Joe Biden, appointed to lead a task force on the subject, does offers proposals, "I'm sure the House and Senate will take a look at them."

Meanwhile, back here in Illinois we have a financial catastrophe on our hands and our legislators are more concerned about redifining marriage and taking guns away from citizens that will obey the law so they can be victimized by those who won't.

    Respectfully,

Why was nothing said before, regarding the additional 2% Social Security tax EVERYONE will now have to pay as of January 01,2012? Also, I am hearing that an additional approx 3.8% of income will also be taxed to begin funding our newest welfare program Obamacare. How can a true Democrat still be supporting Obama when he gets up on tv and says he will not support any tax increases on the middle class ? It is stunning how deep in denial Democrats are regarding this phoney. All he seemed to care about during the "fiscal cliff" negotiations was that he put down the Republicans AND got the wealthier among us to increase their taxes...even though this move will have almost zero effect on our revenue as a nation... And once again the media works as tag team partners with him.

I think I will go to Springfield with a camcorder and just videotape the proceedings, maybe interview some crazy Democrat politicans, edit the whole thing, then market it "Democrats Gone Wild". Who knows I may have to pixel out some of these lawmakers arses or worse.

Democrats are officially out of control locally, statewide and of course nationally. These are not your Daddy's Democrats....these people are nuts.

  5. My wife and I don't make 400,000 dollars a year. I'm grateful for the continuing tax break.

Do you mean the tax break which ended for you and your wife no matter the income with the end of the Soc. Sec. 2% break? Or do you mean continuing of the Bush tax levels ? Or do you mean the temporary tax hike that Democrats are now talking about making permanent? Or the additional trillion dollars in taxes the Democrats nationally are talking about already since the signing of the fiscal cliff deal? I dont know but i see a pattern....you seem to like the tax break but not the people who brought it there...and you constantly favor the people who are consistently and persistently asking for more money. Don't forget that the est. 3.8% tax hike coming to begin to pay for our new welfare program = Obamacare....Wherever there is a tax I see a DemocRAT

    2. I don't mind paying the extra 2% -- it's my Social Security. I will get it back eventually. I'm sorry you don't like making the investment. Besides, the tax break will cover it for the time being, no?

The Bush tax levels have expired. Not sure what you're talking about.

You're also going to have to be clearer on "temporary tax hikes" and "additional trillion dollars in taxes." For whom?

Also, you're going to have to substantiate the 3.8% "tax hike" coming for Obamacare. The article I read in Forbes said most of the cost involved would be paid for by the richest among us.

The middle class is not the upper middle class or the rich. The interests of the middle class are different; indeed, in the growth in income disparity over the last 30 years, the middle class has shrunk, in favor of tax policies that favor the rich.

If you want to carry water for the rich, go ahead, but it has nothing to do with being either a Democrat or Republican -- they're BOTH fine representatives of the moneyed class and corporate interests in general.

"The continuing tax break" is the Bush era tax rates. They did not "expire" - they are the rates for everyone but those in the upper tax bracket - those you call "rich", I call successful. I want to get into that income level and when I do I do not want a malcontent telling me to give them (through the government) 39.5% of the money that I EARNED 100%. Thief. Greedy, and envious are those who feel they are ENTITLED to other people's money... yeah I know that there are people who are uber billionaires (the majority of whom voted for Obumstead) so that noone will ever get as wealthy as they. Remember Margaret Thatcher's quote "the trouble with Socialism, is that eventually you run out of other people's money to spend"

The FLAT tax rate in the former Soviet Union is 13 PERCENT. What about the greed of governments who believe they have the right to take nearly half the money you earn! The greed of unions barking for never ending wage increases at the expense of their neighbors - who statistically make about only 2/3 of what the whiners make. Socialism doesnt work....
