John O'Sullivan

The facts are as follows.

  • Grew up in St. Cajetan parish.
  • Lives in Oak Lawn now.
  • Has a wife and children
  • Is the newly elected democratic committeeman of Worth township.
  • Works for Cook County
  • Has been cleared of charges that he engaged in political activities while on county time.
  • Was appointed to serve the remainder of Kevin Joyce's term.
  • Will serve without pay.
  • Is supporting the election of Bill Cunningham
By all accounts "Johnny O" seems to be a good guy.  He wanted the job so that he could claim he did it and I guess it gives him added credibility as committeeman.

Bill Cunningham is calling for merit selection of judges. Matt O'Shea better gag him fast. This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Merit Selection is nothing more than placement of burnt out lawyers, from big firms, on the bench. It is not selection based upon merit.

Mr. Cunningham, find out what you are talking about.

Cunningham has proved himself to be deficient in the critical analysis area. What pray tell has happened to cause him to take such a position on merit selection. Does he have a clue as to what he is calling for? Does he even know what it is? His position is enormously insulting to all of the sitting judges that reside in his district.

  12. Bill Cunningham, the Democratic candidate for state representative in the 35th District, announced
Tuesday that he will support legislation to enact merit selection of judges in Cook County.

Drawing on nearly two decades of experience as a top administrator in the Cook County Sheriff's Office,
Cunningham said the current judicial election system results in too many Cook County judges being
selected based on their political connections instead of their legal qualifications.

"The method we use to select and retain judges in Cook County is far too politicized and almost
completely lacking in real accountability," Cunningham said. "It's time we take politics out of the court
system and adopt a process that places experienced and respected attorneys on the bench."

If elected to the General Assembly, Cunningham would offer legislation to create a merit selection
commission, which would work with the Chicago Bar Association and Illinois State Bar Association to
screen and select candidates anytime a judgeship is vacated. Only attorneys who are found "qualified" by
the bar associations would be eligible to apply for a vacancy and all candidates would be required to have
practiced law for a minimum of 15 years.

Cunningham said the same commission should also be charged with evaluating each Cook County judge
as they come up for retention every six years and remove underperforming judges from the bench. He
said the current system of ballot retention, in which voters are asked to vote "yes" or "no" on each judge,
places too great of a burden on the average voter to make decisions on judicial candidates they know
    little about.

"There are 70 judges on the ballot for retention this November," Cunningham said. "Few people -- not
even attorneys who have practiced in Cook County for decades -- can make an informed decision on all
70 judges. It is not fair to expect the average voter, who rarely sets foot in a courthouse, to evaluate the
job performance of dozens of judges."

Many political organizations urge the public to blindly vote "yes" on all judges up for retention. And in
most elections, nearly half of all voters in Cook County skip the retention portion of the ballot. As a result,
poor judges are almost never removed from the bench.

I will do everything in my power to make sure this political hack is not elected.

  14. Of all the issues out there why pick merit selection?

    ReplyDelete
  15. Anonymous9/10/2010

This is what happens when the hacks pick a hack. merit selection has a great ring in the name but it's not what we need for the judiciary. Merit selection is needed for alderman and state legistlators.

Mr. Cunningham wants to replace all of the local judges in our courthouses with judges from Highland Park and DuPage county. He has no faith in the ability of the voters to make wise decisions. Cunningham needs to go.

    Matt O’Shea for alderman????
What a mistake this has turned out to be. The comparisons are many but what frequently comes to mind is: Benedict Arnold!
Mr. O’Shea has a been a prodigy of the 19th ward Democrat Organization, senior leaders of the organization have taken Mr. O’Shea under their wing for several years, how does Mr. O’Shea repay the elders for their keen tutelage? By now turning his back on his friends and mentors and siding with the organization from Midway…..”Mr. Madigan”, Mr. Madigan has attempted several times over the years to infer his hand into the political structure of our ward and our organization and to usurp our Organizations candidates by placing his horses into “our” races.
When I think of Mr. O’Shea I am also reminded of Fredo Corleone, the bugling half wit son of Don Corleone, who nearly gets his father killed and his brother killed. Politically Mr. O’Shea has chosen the opposing family he has betrayed his own family that raised and nurtured him and has thought it a better option to make his bones with and aligned himself with them, well we shall see.
If this were the world of boxing Mr. O’Shea would never be able to make the 12 rounds, believe me has not got the guts, determination or talent needed to fight for 12 rounds, he will throw in the towel before this all over.
So After this bout Champ, mark my words; Mr. O’Shea, This little nit wit will be left standing there like Fredo Corleone muttering:
“I can look after myself,… I don’t need no kid brother looking after me,.. I’m not dumb… like they say, I got smarts!”

So much paranoia here. I've always imagined that many of the people on this blog are alcoholics embittered by their bad choices, bad marriages, lack of advancement in their jobs, which is caused by their drinking habits and bad attitudes. It's a vicious cycle. Now I'm sure of this. All the conspiracy theories are typical of people with wet brain. If you feel you are one of the sensible posters here, let's make a pact. We will no longer respond to the paranoid delusions of people suffering from alcohol dimentia.
