August 2010 question of the month.

Ginger Rugai  has announced her retirement after 20 years as alderman of our ward. This months question is twofold.

1. Who should succeed Rugai as alderman of the 19th ward?

2. What were Ginger Rugai's greatest accomplishments as alderman?

    1. Someone with no ties to Rugai.

    2. For her, for the insiders, or for the people of the ward?

While Rugai was in office Western ave went from bad to worse. It is a total disgrace what she allowed to happen there. There was no logical reason for this to happen. Commercial blight in a neighborhood with a very high disposable income during the greatest real estate boom in American history? Come on people.

Ginger will always be remembered for her beautification of Western Avenue, revitalization of 95th Street, 111th st, rebuilt parks, new police station, new fire station, the new walgreens, CVS, rebuilt Metra stations, the new Ag school, new street lighting. And her greatest achievement was the construction of the Beverly Arts Center. Pretty hard to beat that record.

the new alderman will have some tough decisions to make.the city is broke and it will get worse, higher taxes or layoffs will be needed[start with cutting 25 aldermen].the city is short cops and the public pension system will be broke in 10 yrs or sooner.just for the record i am not a city worker, common sense says you can't cut first responders the city may have to privitize some of it's workforce or it will be forced to raise property taxes 10 fold!and wait until more non citizens come here.

  25. Anonymous8/18/2010

Why do some people want to change to 25 aldermen? I understand it would save money, but at what cost to our ward in particular. Do you realize that if there are half as many wards, we will be included with either part of the 18th ward to the north or the 21st ward to the east (which is even worse) or both? I don't want to be lumped in with a place that is TOTALLY ghetto (21st) or still changing, but for the worse (18th). Our communities in 19 are unique in this city.

Why does The Capitalizer continue to incite others with his lies? Or maybe he's just a dumbass who can never get the story straight. Don't take the bait, readers! While I was never a John Somerville fan, the comments made above about him and his family are outrageous. Wasn't the dad a bricklayer, not a cop? Anyway, everyone should remember that this blog is often misused, and that some of the negative comments posted are totally false, often by design. If names were required, The Capitalizer (who has bad blog etiquette in his insistence on typing everything in upper case) would be in trouble and likely sued, as would some other commenters here. Remember that the In and Around 60655 blog host gave up because of the ugliness on that site. I'm sure some of the same people are on here.

  26. Anonymous8/18/2010

I agree with the above post. This is starting to get ugly. Would the blogger please clean this up?

  27. Anonymous8/18/2010

These are the rules that are posted by the blog host on the right side of the screen near the top:

"The purpose of this blog is to serve as a forum to discuss problems facing our neighborhood. Please enjoy it. I will delete all swears or baseless attacks on people or institutions."

The "N" word appeared here recently. I guess to some people that isn't a "swear." I would disagree, but in any case, it's probably not a good idea to allow it here. Also, baseless attacks occurred just a few posts back. Can we elevate the level of discourse or else count on the offending comments being removed?

Matt O'Shea may be a 'nice guy' but Rugai has been grooming him to take over for a long time. Look at how they have his name all over everything. His name has been put out there and it is not by accident. Ex: The quarterly newspaper with his name all over it. Sadly, Matt will be more of the same = less for Mt. Greenwood.

We have the same problems throughout the ward with services. The budget cuts have caused lights to be out longer, special pick-ups to take longer, etc. everywhere in the city, and certainly everywhere in the ward. You're delusional if you think friends and family of people who work in or with the ward office get special treatment.

I also agree with several of the posts above about keeping comments civil and honest. The intent here is to have quality discussion. Name calling and slader serve no purpose.

My answer, nothing, he is just another 19th ward hack doing political work because of the cush job he has. Good luck with Matt same as the old boss will be politics as usual. We need change not only in the 19th ward but in the whole city. These people are straight up crooks!!!!!!!!!!!!!Brogan u are a sexy thing..........

Can you feel the excitement in the air?
What exciting times for change we now have, we are so pumped up and excited, our ward will soon have a new torch bearer, Mathew O’shea!
The ward is excited, the residents are excited, Matt’s friends and neighbors are excited.
Matt is a fine young man who will serve our ward well, he has work very hard for the constituents of the 19th ward and the entire Democratic party, On August 17th at an open ward leadership meeting, our Honorable and long serving Alderman Mrs. Rugai sadly tendered her resignation to the 19th organization leadership, she spoke on her numerous accomplishments, there was not a dry amongst us.
She then spoke to us in such a loving tenor and cadence that it reminded me of Sunday mass. As she spoke she told us that Matt O’shea should be our candidate for the future, she reminded us ALL of the HARD WORK and personal sacrifice matt has performed these many years for the 19th ward and his lifelong dedication to the Democratic Party.
Allow me to second that notion and further speak to Matt’s accomplishments:
Matt is a good young Irish Catholic man, a father, a husband and a friend to many, he has sacrificed his own time and efforts supporting: little league, and softball teams, many youth activities at the park districts, volley ball, football, wrestling, field Hockey and track meets, boy scouts, girl scouts, and bowling. He is an avid supporter at St. Xavier foot ball; he also loves Marist, Brother Rice and Mother McCauley. Matt has even been known to donate his time at the county animal refuge working with the un loved turned in puppies. Matt organized and runs the ridge run every year. Matt is in the ward office working 100 hours per week and with his patented open door policy is always helping the residents with garbage cans, and pot holes and alley clean ups, backed up sewers and fallen trees.
He is instrumental in bringing the Ag school to our fine ward; you can find him there many times on a Saturday night cheering on the sporting teams.
Matt O’shea has been a hard worker for families of the 19th ward and he does this tirelessly for the family and children of the 19th ward. Matt an avid movie buff, started the movies in the park several years back for the children. He always places the best interest of the children and families of the 19th ward in front of his own and his lovely wife and family fully support him.
But his family is not the only group that supports him, oh no, Mayor Richard Daley, The Beloved past assessor Tom Hynes, Danny Hynes, Michael Madigan, Alderman Rugai, Jerry Joyce, Kevin Joyce, Tom Dart (in fact many people compare Matt as the new rising star, much like Tom Dart was 20 years ago), Michael Sheehan, Skinny Sheehan, Kathy Meaney, Rose Bilecki, Tom Ryan, Ed Harmening, the mayors of Oak lawn, Marionette park, Evergreen park all support matt. Worth township Democratic Party chair John O’Sullivan and many others. Matt has the full blessing (literally) of ALL the wards parish clergy.
Matt will single handedly reverse the crime, carry on and improve upon the commercial developments, reverse those still few commercial blights and improve our wards school testing results for our children and he will do this within a few short year or two. He is the man for the job, his experience is long and true, he is a proven leader.
The entire 19th ward Democratic organization, precinct captains and other political leaders all support matt and selected him to be the slated candidate for the upcoming election for Alderman city of Chicago ward 19.
    Congratulations Mr. Alderman O’Shea.

Our party organization, committemen, precinct captains all took place in an open meeting and selected Matt O'Shea, the 19th wars organization has fairly selected Matt and he is our candidate and all party Democrats should recognize this and support Matt O'Shea for Alderman of the 19th ward.
Congratulations Matt the People are behind you.

Simply because the racists, Teachers, police officers and Firefighters come on here and scream and yell and tell lies about the Ward Organization does not mean they are true. these cry babies have been around our Ward for too many years than i care to think, they are and have always been the cry babies and malcontents and always will be, most are racists as can be seen through their blogs.
Matt was selected by us, those captains that are part of the real 19th ward organization in an open and fair selection process by the ward organization and Matt O'Shea is slated to be our candidate for alderman. Please do not believe any of the lies being circulated by the sour grape police, fire, teachers whom seem to be on here constantly ripping the organization, if you read these blogs you can see two things which are appearent:
    1- they lie,
    2- they are obviously racists.

Matt don't pay any attention to the detractors, the residents are behind you, the 19th ward Democratic organization is behind you and that is all you need.
I agree with the other previous bloger..."can you feel the excitment" and I congratulate you Mr. Alderman the Honrable Mathew O'Shea.

Ginger had 20 years to accomplish these things and she failed. Why would we expect O'Shea to accomplish them "within a few short year or two" [sic]?

I can’t believe that Rugai is going to choose not to run as her way out. She should be stepping down 8 months before the race or just after the 2011 primary . This was Jerry Joyce, 19th ward committeeman since 1975 can appoint the next person to the throne. You are telling me that the 19th ward voters with have the rare opportunity to choose the next alderman in a election? Say it ain’t so.

Matt O’ Shea? I think more than 50% of the people in the 19th ward don’t know his name, wouldn’t know him on the street if they saw him.

Precinct captains voted for him? What the 3 or 4 precinct captains that are Hynes hold overs? The 19th ward basically doesn’ t have captains anymore. It not Joyce’s style anymore.

Yes, complainer, the residents of Beverly do raise money for their own playgrounds, and they did it almost 20 years before it was done at Mount Greenwood Park. Kellogg's grass and fence were paid for by the residents of North Beverly, most of whom sent their children to Christ the King. The Board of Ed wouldn't pay for the improvement of their own property. Many years later, actually just a few years ago, the playground equipment at Kellogg was paid for by fundraising, spearheaded by North Beverly resident Erin Ross. The property at Sutherland was improved by the residents for the most part. Like Kellogg, this is now a nice playground for children, surrounded by grass rather that pavement. What school do you think the residents of Beverly can send their kids to that Mount Greenwood residents can't use? What is your nonsense about Christmas decorations in Beverly? Thanks for proving my point about the whining that goes on with some residents of Mount Greenwood. You may not be aware of how much some of the residents of the ward do for themselves. Mount Greenwood is not being abandoned or picked on.

mt greenwood and beverly have both gone down the toilet since ginger's been in office. crime on beat 2211 and the west ends of 2212 and 2213 have little or no police service. robberys, thefts, burlgarys are all up. we all pay alot of tax dollars for police presence and service. its irrelevent that black crime on the east end of 022 is up. we should not suffer loss of or lack of police service because a certain race of "people" dont know how to act. ginger has lied to me, our residents and everyone that our beat car from 2211 is never pulled over east. its over east constantly. the commander of 008 mandates that the garfield ridge and clearing beat cars are to stay on their beats (beat 811/812). why cant our commander or alderman do that? for those that live on 2211 2212 or 2213, look at a beat map and see our big your beat is compared to beats in black areas. for 20 years ginger let beverly and mt greenwood deteriorate and oshea will continue to do the same. vote for anne schaible!!!

OK Matt supporters, Where does Matt stand on privatizing of public owned items like the parking meters. Will he stand up to Daley and speak on our behalf or will he be another "Team Player"? What does he have to say on the current state of all the neighborhoods in the 19th ward? Businesses, schools, taxes, police presence, crime etc. Will Beverly be the only neighborhood that gets any attention? Will he change out some longtime positions in the 19th ward or is he just an extension of Ginger? So here is your opportunity, what is his plan?

As stated in a previous post local citizens have paid for improvements to schools and playgrounds. That alone in my book is grounds to tell this democratic org to go take a flying leep. Our taxes dollars are being used to build schools and playgrounds in the ghetto for people who don't pay a lick in taxes. Police Fire and Teachers may whine but just remeber this come election day you will not have our votes.

I am not a cop or fireman or a teacher, but I just have to say listening to people put down their grievences, especially in the manner that you do (e.g. shut up and put out my fire), you sound just as ignorant and disrespectful as a resident of Englewood might be. You're entitled to your opinion, but please consider the reality of their jobs, especially cops and fireman, the disrespect they have to tolerate on a daily basis, the fact they get a little upset that their jobs don't deem more than a 2% raise. I was stunned myself and it has nothing to do with me. It just makes me sick when you see and hear the flagrant disrespect to the degree that one cop was shot in uniform, his uniform outside his home. So please, please put a little more thought into your criticism because I am fairly certain you have more class. If not, perhaps you should consider taking up residency in Englewood, at least there you will share the same political views of city workers with your neighbors.

Ok now wait a minute here, for one this is why I don’t like this new fangled internet stuff, things become lost in the translation and taken out of context.
What I attempted to say about matt was; that he is a great Man and a great candidate for the Job and you see all of the support he has from the Organization and ALL of the local officials.
I did not mean to infer that matt harbors Ill will towards the police and fire department nor the school teachers, in fact did you know that:
    1. Matt loves the Police officers of this fine city and their families; he cares about them and their children and their futures. This is proven by matt being a leading organizer part of the Chicago Police Junkyard fundraiser every year; Matt donates his time and Also bartends for hours for no charge at these events to help raise funds.
    2. Matt is a real fan and supporter of the Chicago Fire Department, this can be seen by; A- his great support of the Brother hood of the Barrel, matt walked the picket line with these guys when he was a youngster. B-Also Matt is the leading sponsor and organizer for many years now of the Bucks for Burn camp charity, matt was an intricate person in getting this organization set up. Again to help the Children.
    3. Matt works with the alderman and supported the decision of the city to increase the class room size from 32 to 38 students, so that we would not have to lay off teachers to balance a budget. Matt is a big supporter of the teachers and wants to keep them working so the children can get a great education in our fine city.

For the smart @$$ that asks where Matt sits on the parking meters, Matt along with Alderman Rugai fully supports the deal for the meters, do you not understand that the city received: ONE Billion dollars for this lease, where would our city budget be right now, where would all you city workers be right now if we did not get that money in? Maybe you should think about that before you rip on hard working elected civil servants before you make uneducated comments on the facts you smart alleck!

There is a brand new TIF. It includes all the houses from 103 to 111 from western to kedzie. those are the people that are going to get wacked. Remember, the purpose of a tiff is to raise tax money. I suspect this may be why ginger is getting out.

actually i would like to see a northern irish protestant run for alderman and the reason is that most irish catholics have proven themselves to be self serving theives and jail bait. just look at who has gone to the joint the last 20 years all good catholcs, priest included. not a prot, in the bunch. so if you want honesty in govt. vote for a orangeman.

Time to move! I would rather have a short sale than pay more taxes for less services AGAIN. Matt, there is no way anyone will vote for you unless you stand up for the voters in the 19th ward. This new TIF tax for Beverly's benefit stinks. Repeal it.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Anonymous8/23/2010

I am afraid that a vote for Matt is a vote for more of the same. I just can't tell the difference between Ginger and Matt. Ginger has "endorsed" Matt and Matt has "graciously accepted" her endorsement. This was according to the Suntimes. Then he has her picture in that silly newspaper 19th ward quarterly, he put out all over yesterday. And if you look at that paper, there is a story about all the new streetlights and signage coming to 95 th street. It's all nice but the price tag is out of this word because the "funding" as he calls it is from the new TIF. That TIF is going to result in residential tax increases of over 10% during 2009 alone. Wait until these tax bills come out.

I just think that we need to go in a different direction. I think we need to give Anne a serious look.

Why don't we have a candidate forum/debate? Candidates, please present your plan for the 19th ward, priorities and things that need immediate attention. Also include your thoughts and plans for the whole of Chicago ie What would you not stand for? For? Thoughts on raising taxes and would you repeal the TIF on residents for Western Ave? Would you support a forensic audit of the City of Chicago finances? Voters can then post questions to you on this site. Are the candidates brave enough?

I can’t believe that Rugai is going to choose not to run as her way out. She should be stepping down 8 months before the race or just after the 2011 primary. This was Jerry Joyce, 19th ward committeeman since 1975 can appoint the next person to the throne. You are telling me that the 19th ward voters with have the rare opportunity to choose the next alderman in a election? Say it ain’t so.

    CIVIL WAR HAS BROKEN OUT!
    problem here is that there is a huge civil war going on, don’t let these posts from the 19th ward organization and the posts from Matt O’Shea and his wife on this blog fool you;
there is a civil war taking pace my friends, the Joyce’s are falling apart, they are losing their power, Hynes hate the Joyce’s and vice versa, Joyce’s hate the Madigan’s, Sheehan’s hate the Hynes, they all Hate Dart, Rugai is pissed at Joyce’s so she is not stepping down early to give them the trump card, because the Joyce’s will stick it Matt and place someone else in as Alderman.
But rather Rugai and Sheehan’s and friends feel Matt can hold his own in a election and take the Job away from the Joyce’s grip and build upon their already formidable base.
Joyce’s tell every public official that they know upon winning an election that they “the Joyce’s” got them elected, funny they never discuss their MANY losses.
My prediction Rugai and Matt O’Shea pull one close to the vest and score a win in the Aldermanic race of the 19th ward and build a new power base for the next few decades. Permanently placing the Joyce family on Hiatus in Florida

First she makes them kill the parade then she makes them give up their money. WTF. What a bunch of wimps. They gave up all their money without even a whimper.

Do you want to know who did all the dirty work? Look at the parade committee members that went on some public payroll shortly after the parade was killed. Those will be your culprits.
