Political pushback preceded a pair of lopsided votes for bankrolling infrastructure for a South Loop project led by billionaire team owner Joe Mansueto. Some questioned using TIF dollars to build a parking garage.




The 78 development site, a stretch land south of Roosevelt Road and west of Clark Street in the South Loop, got the green light from a City Council committee for $425 million to subsidize public infrastructure.

Despite myriad concerns, a City Council committee Monday overwhelmingly approved a $425 million tax increment financing subsidy to bankroll the public improvements needed to support a South Loop development anchored by a new soccer stadium privately financed by the Chicago Fire.

MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. - The suspect who shot an Indiana State Police trooper during a car chase Friday morning has been found dead, authorities said.

What we know:

The shooting happened near a Speedway gas station at 2884 U.S. 421 in Michigan City.

Indiana State Police said the chase began around 5:30 a.m. when officers in Berrien County, Michigan, tried to stop a stolen silver Ford F-150. The suspect crossed into Indiana and got away.

A short time later, an Indiana State Police trooper found the truck on Interstate 94 and began chasing it before the two vehicles collided on U.S. 421.

Police said the suspect then opened fire on the trooper, and the trooper returned fire as the suspect drove away.

Chief Keef performs last month at the Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash Festival at SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview and at the Obama Presidential Library.

Chicago rapper Chief Keef will launch his “Chief Keef Live” tour from Chicago in September with a homecoming show at Northerly Island.

The announcement comes on the heels of an electrifying red-light-washed performance at Summer Smash weeks ago in Bridgeview.

Tickets go on sale Friday for the tour, which lists 19 stops, including New York and San Francisco, before ending in Las Vegas. This will be Chief Keef’s first major tour since 2024.

Deep Tunnel has never reached its limit. After weekend's heavy rains, it’s almost full. 
The massive system of tunnels and reservoirs was built to contain Chicago’s flood water, protect area rivers and Lake Michigan. Now, there’s a risk that suburbs will flood and sewers will overflow into Chicago waterways.




The Thornton Reservoir in South Holland sits nearly full Monday after a weekend of intense rain.

For the first time in history, Deep Tunnel, Chicago’s massive system of underground tunnels and reservoirs designed to hold flood water, is almost completely full after a weekend of heavy rain.

Built over more than a half-century, Deep Tunnel sends floodwaters from Chicago and nearby suburbs through more than 100 miles of tunnels into three reservoirs located just outside of the city. It was designed to help protect area rivers as well as Lake Michigan.

LAKE GENEVA, Wis. (WLS) -- Geneva Lake police provided more information Monday on a boat crash that led to the deaths of three children last week. On Friday afternoon, a sudden and severe storm system swept across Walworth County and the surrounding area, officials said. 

The National Weather Service said peak wind gusts were between 90 and 100 mph. The Lake Geneva Fire Department said they responded to 75 calls for service, including a dive rescue, two structure fires, two incidents involving trees on vehicles with entrapment and 37 calls involving downed wires or electrical hazards. Police said hundreds of trees were downed, and buildings were damaged. The storm created extremely hazardous boating conditions on Geneva Lake. 

A privately owned 25-foot 2024 Nautique P25 vessel, which features a maximum capacity of 19 passengers, was navigating the lake during the storm, officials said.
