Yellow Freight is No More
The Teamsters Union was served legal notice today that Yellow Corp. is ceasing operations and filing for bankruptcy.
“Today’s news is unfortunate but not surprising. Yellow has historically proven that it could not manage itself despite billions of dollars in worker concessions and hundreds of millions in bailout funding from the federal government. This is a sad day for workers and the American freight industry,” said Teamsters General President Sean M. O’Brien.
New idea
Nearly 50 people were shot, five of them fatally, Friday into Sunday night in Mayor Brandon Johnson’s (D) Chicago. Teachers union is set to do a bullet buyback program instead of a gun buyback program (guns are bad don't you know).
ABC 7 / Chicago Sun-Times noted that four others were fatally shot Friday into Sunday night, and those shooting victims were among the at least 47 people who were shot.
The first fatal shooting of the weekend occurred around 10:20 p.m. Friday. Two men, one of whom was 61 years old, pulled guns on each other “in the 2600-block of West Luther Street.” The 61-year-old was shot in the head and pronounced dead at a hospital.
A 28-year-old man was shot in the face and killed in Auburn Gresham Saturday night around 8:00 p.m.
A 20-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were walking “in the 1300-block of West Devon Avenue” around 1:45 p.m. Sunday when a drive-by shooter opened fire on them, shooting the man ten times. He was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Breitbart News reported that nine people were shot just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday morning in Chicago’s Lawndale neighborhood when multiple people exited a Jeep and opened fire on a group of women. One woman was killed, and eight others were injured.
At 5:00 p.m. Sunday, another drive-by shooting occurred on the “6400 block of South Albany Avenue.” There was an exchange of words between someone in the car and a 66-year-old man before shots rang out. The 66-year-old was shot in the chest and was taken to hospital, where he died.
The Sun-Times pointed out that 342 people were killed in Chicago from January 1, 2023, through July 30, 2023.

White America: Disappeared and Replaced
July 27, 2023
Paul Craig Roberts
In the United States the majority of the population remains white despite 58 years of mass immigration of non-whites. Despite remaining a large majority, white Americans are not only being replaced but are being disappeared along with their history.
You no longer see white families in corporate ads. If a family is shown, it is a black man, white woman and mixed race children, or it is an Asian woman, white man and mixed race children. A white family has been given negative meaning as a statement against “diversity.” Diversity has trumped the basis of a nation state, which is a homogeneous population. A diverse, multicultural population is a Tower of Babel, not a nation. Without a common culture, there is not a common interest. Without a common interest, there is no nation, only a geographical boundary.
Secret Service denies protection request for RFK
Typical turnaround time for pro forma protection requests from presidential candidates is 14-days. After 88-days of no response and after several follow-ups by our campaign, the Biden Administration just denied our request. Secretary Mayorkas: "I have determined that Secret Service protection for Robert F Kennedy Jr is not warranted at this time."
Our campaign's request included a 67-page report from the world's leading protection firm, detailing unique and well established security and safety risks aside from commonplace death threats.

The Looming War Against China
Economic Logic has been Replaced by National Security Overrides
MICHAEL HUDSON • JULY 22, 2023

The July NATO summit in Vilnius had the feeling of a funeral, as if they had just lost a family member – Ukraine. To clear away NATO’s failure to drive Russia out of Ukraine and move NATO right up to the Russian border, its members tried to revive their spirits by mobilizing support for the next great fight – against China, which is now designated as their ultimate strategic enemy. To prepare for this showdown, NATO announced a commitment to extend their military presence all the way to the Pacific.
The plan is to carve away China’s military allies and trading partners, above all Russia, starting with the fight in Ukraine. President Biden has said that this war will be global in scope and will take many decades as it expands to ultimately isolate and break up China.
The U.S.-imposed sanctions against trade with Russia are a dress rehearsal for imposing similar sanctions against China. But only the NATO allies have joined the fight. And instead of wrecking Russia’s economy and “turning the ruble to rubble” as President Biden predicted, NATO’s sanctions have made it more self-reliant, increasing its balance of payments and international monetary reserves, and hence the ruble’s exchange rate.
To cap matters, despite the failure of trade and financial sanctions to injure Russia – and indeed, despite NATO’s failures in Afghanistan and Libya, NATO countries committed themselves to trying the same tactics against China. The world economy is to be split between US/NATO/Five Eyes on the one hand, and the rest of the world – the Global Majority – on the other. EU Commissioner Joseph Borrell calls this as a split between the US/European Garden (the Golden Billion) and the Jungle threatening to engulf it, like an invasion of its well-manicured lawns by an invasive species.
No special deal for Hunter Biden
Will face justice as everyone else does
WILMINGTON, Del. — A plea deal struck by Hunter Biden for failing to pay his taxes appeared in jeopardy Wednesday after a disagreement arose about a separate gun charge.
It wasn't clear if a deal could still be reached on Wednesday, as lawyers huddled to see if a delay until early September would be needed.

Hard to believe this vicious rumor about liberals
Liberal Suburbs Have Their Own Border Wall
Residents of rich blue towns talk about inclusion, but their laws do the opposite.

The New York City suburb of Scarsdale, located in Westchester County, New York, is one of the country’s wealthiest communities, and its residents are reliably liberal. In 2020, three-quarters of Scarsdale voters cast ballots for Joe Biden over Donald Trump. One can safely presume that few Scarsdale residents are ardent backers of Trump’s wall on the Mexican border. But many of them support a less visible kind of wall, erected by zoning regulations that ban multifamily housing and keep non-wealthy people, many of them people of color, out of their community.
Across the country, a lot of good white liberals, people who purchase copies of White Fragility and decry the U.S. Supreme Court for ending affirmative action, sleep every night in exclusive suburbs that socially engineer economic (and thereby racial) segregation by government edict. The huge inequalities between upscale municipalities and their poorer neighbors didn’t just happen; they are in large measure the product of laws that are hard to square with the inclusive In This House, We Believe signs on lawns in many highly educated, deep-blue suburbs.
In a new report for The Century Foundation, I contrast Scarsdale with another Westchester County suburb, Port Chester, which is just eight miles away but has remarkably different demographics. Scarsdale’s median household income, in excess of $250,000, is nearly three times that of Port Chester, as is the portion of residents with a college degree. And whereas three-quarters of Port Chester’s elementary students qualify for free or reduced-price meals at school, zero percent of Scarsdale’s students do. In Scarsdale, 87 percent of residents are non-Hispanic white or Asian American, whereas 69 percent of Port Chester residents are Black or Hispanic.

The Indian government says it has suspended exports of non-basmati white rice
in order to lower the price of the commodity in the country.
I wonder about the effect upon the global cost of food.
India’s ministry of consumer affairs, food, and public distribution, announced the export prohibition in a statement on Thursday.
Widely consumed globally, non-basmati rice is a type of rice that has a small grain size.
The ministry said the export ban on the rice followed a surge in retail prices by 3 percent in a month, after late but heavy monsoon rains, which caused significant damage to crops.
“In order to ensure adequate availability of non-basmati white rice in the Indian market and to allay the rise in prices in the domestic market, the government of India has amended the export policy,” the food ministry said, citing an 11.5 percent increase in retail prices in 12 months.
“The prohibition on export of non-basmati white rice will lead to lowering of prices for the consumers in the country.”
The government clarified that parboiled rice, which represented 7.4 million tons of exports in 2022, was not included in the ban.
Accoridng to the ministry, the ban took effect from July 20, but vessels under loading would be allowed for exports.
The development comes a few days after the Russian government halted its participation in a deal that allowed the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea — straining the global food supply.
India accounts for more than 40 percent of world’s rice exports, and reduction in shipments from other exporters may impact global food prices, which were already rising as a result of the Russian invasion of Ukraine last year.
India’s decision may have more impact on African buyers, especially Nigeria, a major importer of the commodity.
In 2021, Nigeria imported rice primarily from India at $5.78 million, representing the highest imports relative to Thailand ($948,000), the United States ($694,000), Vietnam ($589,000), and United Arab Emirates ($509,000).
Former President Muhammadu Buhari had, in August 2019, shut all land borders in the country as part of efforts to curtail smuggling and boost local production of the staple.
Although some borders have now been reopened to allow for the movement of goods, this had caused local rice production to decline, according to the Rice Processors Association of Nigeria (RIPAN).
Rice is one of the most consumed staples in Nigeria, with a consumption per capita of 32 kilogramme (kg).

JFK's grandson calls RFK Jr.'s presidential candidacy an 'embarrassment' and 'vanity project'

WASHINGTON — The grandson of President John F. Kennedy, Jack Schlossberg, ridiculed Robert F. Kennedy Jr., on Friday for not endorsing Joe Biden's re-election bid and running for president himself as he continues to spread conspiracy theories.
In a video posted to his Instagram, Schlossberg, Caroline Kennedy's son, said his grandfather's legacy is important and that Biden is becoming "the greatest progressive president we've ever had."
"Under Biden, we've added 13 million jobs, unemployment is at its lowest in 60 years. Biden passed the largest investment in infrastructure since the New Deal and the largest investment in green energy ever. He's appointed more federal judges than any president since my grandfather. He ended our longest war. He ended the Covid pandemic, and he ended Donald Trump. These are the issues that matter. And if my cousin, Bobby Kennedy Jr., cared about any of them, he would support Joe Biden too," Schlossberg said.
"Instead, he's trading in on Camelot, celebrity conspiracy theories and conflict for personal gain and fame," he said about his second cousin. "I've listened to him. I know him. I have no idea why anyone thinks he should be president. What I do know is his candidacy is an embarrassment. Let's not be distracted again by somebody's vanity project. I'm excited to vote for Joe Biden in my state's primary, and again in the general election. And I hope you will too."

Tony Bennett RIP

NEW
YORK — Tony Bennett, the eminent and timeless stylist whose devotion to
classic American songs and knack for creating new standards such as “I
Left My Heart In San Francisco” graced a decadeslong career that brought
him admirers from Frank Sinatra to Lady Gaga, died Friday. He was 96,
just two weeks short of his birthday.
Publicist Sylvia Weiner
confirmed Bennett’s death to The Associated Press, saying he died in his
hometown of New York. There was no specific cause, but Bennett had been
diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.
The last of the
great saloon singers of the mid-20th century, Bennett often said his
lifelong ambition was to create “a hit catalog rather than hit records.”
He released more than 70 albums, bringing him 19 competitive Grammys —
all but two after he reached his 60s — and enjoyed deep and lasting
affection from fans and fellow artists.
Bennett didn’t tell his
own story when performing; he let the music speak instead — the
Gershwins and Cole Porter, Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern. Unlike his
friend and mentor Sinatra, he would interpret a song rather than embody
it. If his singing and public life lacked the high drama of Sinatra’s,
Bennett appealed with an easy, courtly manner and an uncommonly rich and
durable voice — “A tenor who sings like a baritone,” he called himself —
that made him a master of caressing a ballad or brightening an up-tempo
number.
“I enjoy entertaining the audience, making them forget
their problems,” he told The Associated Press in 2006. “I think people
... are touched if they hear something that’s sincere and honest and
maybe has a little sense of humor. ... I just like to make people feel
good when I perform.”

Bennett
was praised often by his peers, but never more meaningfully than by
what Sinatra said in a 1965 Life magazine interview: “For my money, Tony
Bennett is the best singer in the business. He excites me when I watch
him. He moves me. He’s the singer who gets across what the composer has
in mind, and probably a little more.”
He not only survived the
rise of rock music but endured so long and so well that he gained new
fans and collaborators, some young enough to be his grandchildren. In
2014, at age 88, Bennett broke his own record as the oldest living
performer with a No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 chart for “Cheek to
Cheek,” his duets project with Lady Gaga. Three years earlier, he topped
the charts with “Duets II,” featuring such contemporary stars as Gaga,
Carrie Underwood and Amy Winehouse, in her last studio recording. His
rapport with Winehouse was captured in the Oscar-nominated documentary
“Amy,” which showed Bennett patiently encouraging the insecure young
singer through a performance of “Body and Soul.”

His
final album, the 2021 release “Love for Sale,” featured duets with Lady
Gaga on the title track, “Night and Day” and other Porter songs.
For
Bennett, one of the few performers to move easily between pop and jazz,
such collaborations were part of his crusade to expose new audiences to
what he called the Great American Songbook.
“No country has
given the world such great music,” Bennett said in a 2015 interview with
Downbeat Magazine. “Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, Jerome
Kern. Those songs will never die.”
