Earlier today a resolution was brought before the City Council calling for the mobilization of the Illinois National Guard to patrol the streets of Chicago. I welcome any outside resources that will make our City safer and appreciate the support that the National Guard has already provided us. I also think it is important to hear from police leadership and other law enforcement partners about
a potential collaboration with the National Guard before a vote is taken. Unfortunately, the Chicago Police Department and Illinois National Guard were not present to share their thoughts or answer questions.
a potential collaboration with the National Guard before a vote is taken. Unfortunately, the Chicago Police Department and Illinois National Guard were not present to share their thoughts or answer questions.
For that reason, I voted to have a hearing on this matter in the City Council’s Public Safety Committee. Public Safety Committee Chairman Chris Taliaferro has committed to hosting this hearing before the next City Council meeting. He has further committed to inviting all appropriate law enforcement leaders to participate so that we can have a full and informed discussion.
I support a hearing on this matter not because I am opposed to partnering with the National Guard, but because we need more information from Chicago’s leaders about how this crisis will be addressed. We also need to hear from CPD Superintendent Brown on plans to address manpower issues created by record high retirements and providing relief to officers who have been working twelve hour shifts with days off cancelled.
Like so many Chicagoans I am frustrated by the violence and lawlessness that our City has seen this year. It is clear that additional resources are needed and that a comprehensive plan is needed to address this problem. I look forward to participating in that discussion and fighting to bring in any available resources to support our officers. But any effort to support the Chicago Police Department, must be done in consultation with the Chicago Police Department.
Sincerely,
Matthew J. O'Shea
