Support, Tips & Donations

While a small percentage of idiots ventilate one another with reckless abandon, we diligently record, document and illustrate every stupid event. However, during this time of a global pandemic and imminent Great Depression 2.0, we ask that you support your local COVID-19 charity instead or our stupid site.

If you feel to need to support the Chicago Scanner community, we ask that you please support those who provide everyone with up to the minute news and information – Spot News, Chicago Scanner & CrimeIsDown.com.

*Source Data & Editor’s Note

We compile our own dataset using the following sources: Chicago Tribune, Chicago Sun-Times, Homicide Watch Chicago (no longer updated), DNAInfo Chicago (out of business), Chicago Redeye Homicide Tracker (no longer updated), NBC5 Chicago, Chicago Tribune’s Shooting Tracker & Homicide Tracker, Cook County Medical Examiner, CPD’s Historical Data Set, City of Chicago Data Portal, Chicago Police Department Arrest Record Search and CPD CLEARMAP.

Community areas and neighborhoods are determined by the Chicago Tribune’s Boundaries App and/or Crimeisdown.com’s most excellent Incident Map.

Editor’s note: All murders are homicides, but not all homicides are murders. We count homicides, whereas the CPD counts murders. A homicide, or a non-fatal shooting, regardless of type or by whom, within the city limits of Chicago counts towards our total metric, including anything on the expressways. CPD-involved, ISP-involved and justifiable homicides all count. Reckless homicides may count if the Medical Examiner rules that the cause of death was a homicide. Suicides do not count. Additional definitions can be found on the Glossary page.

  1. This is off topic but it did happen in the Chicago area. I know I've heard people joke how no one it seems is dying of anything else but Corona Virus lately, unless it's a homicide that can't be swept under the rug. Yesterday it hit home. My daughter and 2 sons joined us for Easter dinner. My daughter mentioned how one of her girlfriends grandmother had passed away Thursday after having a heart attack while she was baking. The woman was 89 and in good health & certainly not suffering from the virus. When the family came to sign release for the funeral home they noticed cause of death listed as Corona Virus, they refused to sign and hospital then refused to release the body, stating that if they signed off on the Virus as the cause of death the state and it's hospitals are going to receive more money from the government. Needless to say the family is hiring an attorney and hopefully something is resolved by today, this happened at Christ Hospital in Oak lawn,Il,just outside of Chicago, has anyone else heard of this type of nonsense and while we are on the topic has anyone known of anyone dying lately of something other THAN the virus??
