CHICAGO - Mayor Lori Lightfoot wants the Chicago Teachers Union to call off its strike before there's agreement on a new contract, but the union isn't having any of it.
In a letter to CTU President Jesse Sharkey, Lightfoot says the two sides have made progress but that since it is unclear that an agreement can be reached Monday, she encouraged the teachers to return to work while negotiations continue.
Striking Chicago teachers who are seeking smaller class sizes and higher pay also are demanding that the nation's third-largest city do more to lower housing costs and put more resources into helping homeless students.
ReplyDeleteThe demand for affordable housing citywide - for students and their financially-strapped families as well as for school employees - stands as a dramatic example of organized labor's effort to expand bargaining beyond bread-and-butter issues.
The pursuit is part of the union's "social justice" agenda and is a unique departure from standard negotiating tactics. Despite early rejection by city officials, teachers argue that the issue belongs on the bargaining table.
Very true. Also though, is the undercurrent of radicalism of the CTU leadership especially Sharkey who is an avowed "Socialist" and I knew from the start that this would lead to a strike regardless of what the city offered. They are using the children as hostages to show their power and to force strapped TAX PAYERS to continue to add EXTRA dollars to a failing school system. Lightfoot is a left winger as well and is on their side as much as she can, even at TAX PAYER'S expense but as she said this morning, we do not have unlimited funds. The teachers do not care. I for one am sick of hearing them complain. And teachers, do not think for one minute that the parents are REALLY on your side. You have their kids as hostages, and you control to a certain extent, their grades and therefore their children's futures. They have to fake smile and feign support for you. Inwardly they hate you. Sorry, just my take.
DeleteIt's not the teachers, it's their commie union heads.
