That was the year that the Democratic Party got rid of Old Man Daley and Rizzo from Philadelphia (both conservatives) and to pay Daley back for 1968. The socialists led by Jesse Jackson and Ald Bill Singer endorsed George McGovern. The party took a hard left hand turn that year and never recovered.
