DURBIN CALLS FOR TOUGHER RAIL CARS AFTER GALENA TRAIN DERAILMENT. This is very relevant to the 19th ward since approximately 5000 railcars roll down Talman-Rockwell-Maplewood every week. God forbid that ever happens here.
CHICAGO — U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin is calling for tougher rail tank cars in the wake of a derailment near Galena, Illinois of a BNSF Railway freight train transporting North Dakota crude oil, Associated Press is reporting.
In a statement, Durbin said the rising number of train derailments across the country "is unacceptable." He says the Obama administration should act quickly to finalize their rule to strengthen tank car standards.
Durbin says regulators need to look at not just the safety of the rail cars, but the safety of what is being put into those cars. He did not mention whether a Keystone XL pipeline would be the safest way to transport oil.
There were no injuries in Thursday's derailment of 21 cars of a 105-car train that continues to burn.
BNSF says the train's tank cars were a newer model known as the 1232. But 1232 standard cars involved in three other accidents have split open in the past year.
Durbin has no idea about how safe this mode of transportation is. Several hundred thousand of these rail cars are in service and a few have been in accidents. Tank cars are much safer than semi trucks pulling tanks. What is going on at the southern border of the U S is more of a threat than tank cars! Durbin is a joke and He knows it!

ReplyDeleteOpen the Pipeline and they wouldn't be needed. But then, you wouldn't get your kickbacks from the owners of the railroads and transporting trains and oil cars, now would you, little sawed-off Commie [Democrat] Durbin.
ReplyDeleteHow much money have our elected officials taken from the railroads?
ReplyDeleteDurbin's a piece of trash - approve and construct the pipeline
