DURBIN PAID TOP WOMAN LESS THAN MAN, FEDERAL RECORDS SHOW

CHICAGO - The Oberweis campaign has joined other organizations like Our America Fund in targeting U.S. Senator Dick Durbin's pay discrimination between his male and female staffers.

Durbin has run on the issue of equal pay for men and women, and often attacked Republicans for not being sympathetic to this issue.

According to Oberweis, however, federal records show that during the last six years, Durbin paid a top female staffer in his state office $83,832 less than a top man in the same position. The 11 percent disparity is even greater because the man left the government payroll for a short time to work on a political campaign.

"It doesn't pay to be a woman on Dick Durbin's staff," said Oberweis. "Once again, his public rhetoric is contradicted by facts and his record."

The employees in question are two of the highest paid individuals in Durbin's state office. The female became "Director" of the Chicago office about six years ago. The male was either Springfield or Downstate "Director" during that same time, according to federal records:

• William Houlihan, Downstate Director. Total pay — $843,243.
• Clarisol-Avila Duque, Chicago Director. Total pay — $759,411.
• Difference: $83,832. 11.0 percent.
• Average difference in pay per year: $13,972

A separate analysis earlier this year said Durbin paid his female staffers an average of $11,000-a-year less than men.

Durbin said this in his own press release earlier this month: “That when they (women) do the same work that they are entitled to the same pay. That is not too much to ask. In fact, we should demand it.”

Durbin appears to have recognized his own hypocrisy recently and raised the woman director's pay after a number of years being grossly lower than the male director's pay. Even so, the woman averaged nearly $14,000 less in pay the last six years compared to the man.

"Dick Durbin's record on gender pay is abysmal," Oberweis said. "Like on nearly every issue, his record doesn't match his blustery partisan rhetoric."
