Same Sex Marriage

“Same-sex Marriage:” What do Nature and Nature’s God say?

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
The Illinois General Assembly is being asked to consider a bill called “The Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act.” This is a deceptive title that ignores basic truths.
Marriage comes to us from nature. The human species comes in two complementary sexes, male and female. Their sexual union is called marital. It not only creates a place of love for two adults but also a home for loving and raising their children. It provides the biological basis for personal identity.
It is physically impossible for two men or two women to consummate a marriage, even when they share a deep friendship or love. Does this mean nature is cruel or that God is unfair? No, but it does mean that marriage is what nature tells us it is and that the State cannot change natural marriage. Civil laws that establish “same-sex marriage” create a legal fiction. The State has no power to create something that nature itself tells us is impossible.
Neither did the Church create marriage. The Church asks if a man and woman proposing to marry are mature, responsible and free, willing to commit themselves to one another before the Lord in the presence of the community of the faithful to a lifelong relationship of fidelity to one another and openness to the creation and care for new life in their children. Christ raised marital union to the dignity of a sacrament, giving it significance beyond that given it by nature; but, like the State, the Church cannot change the natural basis of marriage. Does this mean that the Church is anti-gay? No, for the Church welcomes everyone, respects each one personally and gives to each the spiritual means necessary to convert to God’s ways and maintain friendship with Christ.
The Catholic Church in the Archdiocese of Chicago has consistently condemned violence toward or hatred of homosexually oriented men and women. Good pastoral practice encourages families to accept all their children and not break relationships with them.
The Archdiocese offers Mass and other spiritual help to those who live their homosexuality anonymously (Courage groups) and also to those who want to be publicly part of the gay community (AGLO, which celebrates its twenty fifth anniversary this year). People live out their sexual identity in different ways, but the Church offers the means to live chastely in all circumstances, as the love of God both obliges and makes possible.
Should the lame duck legislature or the new Assembly take up the passage of a “same-sex marriage” law, it will be acting against the common good of society. We will all have to pretend to accept something that is contrary to the common sense of the human race.
Those who continue to distinguish between genuine marital union and same sex arrangements will be regarded in law as discriminatory, the equivalent of bigots. This proposed legislation will have long term consequences because laws teach; they tell us what is socially acceptable and what is not, and most people conform to the dictates of their respective society, at least in the short run.
What happens next? If we ignore in law the natural complementary of man and woman in creation, then the natural family is undermined. Our individual lives become artificial constructs protected by civil “rights” that destroy natural rights. Human dignity and human rights are then reduced to the whims of political majorities. When the ways of nature and nature’s God conflict with civil law, society is in danger. It is to that danger that we direct your attention.
We urge you to visit www.ilcatholic.org to stay updated on the effort to redefine marriage in our state and to find information on how to contact your state legislator.

Once again will we have another unpopular drastic change slipped by us during a lame deck session where we can have the liberal Democrats sneak something through without debate or a reasonable public hearing?

I do not know about popularity. In the recent election, every state either voted for gay marriage or voted against outlawing it. Demographically, a majority of Americans, right now, support gay marriage. See Gallup. If you ask young voters, it is overwhelming. It is a truly moot issue.

Southern Illinois is more south than the south. When I travel to St. Louis for ball games, it amazes me the difference. But I still think that it would pass a popular vote subject to referenda.

Nevertheless, in my view, Const. rights should not be subject to the whims of the masses. See the Cali. voters for Obama - people lose rights and often money when this happens.

My support for gay marriage is because I support Liberty, personal freedom, and families (straight and gay).

If you are for liberty and personal freedom, then put enough language in these bills to protect religious folk. Otherwise major religions that oppose "gay" marriage will be subject to "civil rights" violations. It is already happening in Canada and they have barely had these laws for 6 years !!

We cannot do this with a lame duck session and no debate...Fran Hurley and Bill Cunningham wanted the Catholic vote and said NOTHING about this in any of their mailers. This is too important to sneak throught like they did last year with the massive tax hike. "the 50% TEMPORARY TAX HIKE" which became "the 67% TEMPORARY TAX HIKE" at the last minute (in a lame duck session of course)....oops sorry we had to change that - my bad. Now the Democrat dominated Illinois legislature is talking about making it "the 50% which became the 67% TAX HIKE WHICH BECAME THE PERMANENT TAX HIKE" all during.....you guessed it the lame duck session. These people are out of their minds. If they did not campaign on it they should not vote on it. Is it possible they HID their true views on redefining marriage until after the election? And if they did - why? I mean it is supposed to be so popular!

You are correct Murph: so who votes in that position for us? Is it Bill Cunningham? He has not been sworn in as State Senator yet either. I seriously would like to know so I can place a call and get some others to do the same. Also, I looked up some quotes from Fran on this subject

From the Examiner "Hurley said she would vote "no" on gay marriage, although she acknowledged that she does have a gay relative and "would hate to deny her the right to marry." Hurley also said she would vote "yes" on medical marijuana."

Again what they told us they will or will not do is not often what they actually do or do not do. Any information on who to contact would be helpful. I did see Cunningham's office is 10400 S Western Ave, Chicago. which I believe is the Ward office. Should we call their?

    3. Everyone should be contacting their Cunningham and Maloney on this topic and letting them know how you feel. Please let everyone know what type of response you get.

I support Cardinal George over any 19th ward politician. With their support of a redefinition of marriage so goes my support of OShea, Cunningham and Hurley. We finally can see that this is exactly what the party leadership in Springfield has been angling for.

I have noticed that whenever we turn up the heat on Maloney especially -he reconsiders. Remember when they were trying to make very draconian changes to the home schooling system? Those people simply THREATENED to go outside his office and protest - and he pulled the bill. So I think we should consider protesting outside Hurley and Cunningham's offices if necessary.

    2. I don't believe that Senator Maloney ever considered such a bill. Re the concept of demonstrating, I suggest a simple phone call to let them know how you feel about a topic. Demonstrating outside their office can be counterproductive to everyone.

When did Senator Maloney vote to table the gay marriage proposal? Do you have any source for this? In the most recent vote on gay marriage Edward Maloney voted in favor of gay marriage as you can see in the roll call (http://illinoisreview.typepad.com/illinoisreview/2013/01/same-sex-marriage-proposal-slowed-down-in-illinois-senate.html). Whatever his stance from the past, Maloney fully supports gay marriage now and the current proposal.

According to Illinois Review, Illinois Senator Ed Maloney (sponsor of SB 136) stated last week that “…we’re not going for the private school students, we’re going to change that [in the proposal]. What we want to know is where the homeschoolers are. It’s as simple as that.“ - Maloney did in fact sponsor a bill to regulate home schoolers, and was roundly criticized by those people and they were planning to protest at his office. He quickly dropped that bill.
