More Teachers Strike

What do you think about the Chicago teachers strike now? Good? Bad? Indifferent?

In this Obama economy, Chicago taxpayers simply cannot afford to give teachers a raise.

  2. I hope it lasts a couple of weeks and due to the union not budging, Rahm makes an end run around them and sets up a big charter system.

Sure, a two week disruption without school is a very big deal. But if Lewis loses, the students will be a lot better off in the long run.

The eyes of the country are watching Chicago now. I have been very interested in this issue, which was why I searched and found this blog to see what was happening at "ground zero".

You have to admire Tony Bansley's courage and initiative in taking on the Mt. Hope Cemetery issues but he is misguided in his approach and naive in its outcome. First of all the Governor has no jurisdiction in the matter. It is Chicago Police who are responsible for enforcing local traffic and criminal laws. Unfortunately, the Mayor of Chicago never fulfilled his campaign pledge to add 1000 more Officers to the overworked and understaffed Police Department. Therefore, we are denied the adequate Police services we pay for, need and deserve. It is the responsibility of the Cook County Sheriff to enforce laws in cemeteries in unincorporated Cook County like Mt. Hope. Next, the Troost family who owns Mt. Hope Cemetery has agreed to put a back gate on 119th Street which may alleviate some of the congestion on exiting processions. Next, when was the last time you saw a peaceful march have any effect upon thugs. They march and demonstrate all the time on the south and west sides yet the killings continue. The decent folks who are following the laws while grieving will certainly be highly offended as they see a bunch of white folks holding up signs while "peacefully protesting" while their procession drives by. Make no mistake about it, the protesters will consist almost entirely of white people since no blacks were "invited" on the official Facebook Event Page. You can be sure that both Alderman O'Shea and Representative Cunningham will not be in attendance as this Event has the capability of producing negative media attention and may even attract the Revs Al & jesse into our hood. There also stands a high chance of incidental congestion as there is an annual permitted block party taking place on 114th and Washtenaw the same day so the peaceful protest probably also requires a permit. A better and more effective way of showing neighborhood solidarity would be to picket the Mayor at City Hall and bring the footage of the violating gangsters displaying their insane behavior.

    2. Some of your points are well taken, but at least there's a discussion now, and it's thanks to Bainsley. I especially like your suggestion re picketing City Hall. Keep in mind there is a meeting that will include Dart, and I suspect this whole question of jurisdiction will be addressed.

It's orchestrated by Rahm, Obuma, the Teachers Union and their Leadership. Obuma and Rahm will come out and save the Day just before the Election, to give obuma a bounce. All Smoke and Mirrors

  6. The last Anon: I don't believe this at all. Such events with major players of strong will and different agendas, and many thousands of minor players are so unpredictable, that even if there was a master-control conspiracy theory, the chances of it coming off as planned are nil.... due to the overwhelming chances of things going wrong.

Also, time and time again it is shown that the voters have their minds made up long before the election, and any attempt at a 'bounce' on the day just before an election would have little or no effect anyway.

  7. Also, in regards to the blog purpose, Murph, you said

"Keep in mind that public service can be a thankless job..."

The striking teachers have refused to engage in the required public service they are hired to do. In fact, what they are doing is the opposite of public service. They are engaging in a public disservice by attacking education.

Is their immunity from unnecessary criticism lifted now?

I think the strike and the public solidarity of the teachers and the community was amazing.

Why would Dart be involved in the teachers' strike? Oh, he wouldn't. You're just posting off-topic again.
