CHICAGO — Teachers in the nation's third-largest school district voted overwhelmingly to authorize the first strike in 25 years if their union and the city cannot reach a deal on a contract this summer – signaling just how badly the relationship between teachers and Chicago school officials has deteriorated, union officials said Monday.
Chicago Teachers Union President Karen Lewis announced the result of last week's balloting – nearly 90 percent of its 26,502 members voted to authorize a strike _and called it "an indictment of the state of the relationship between the management of CPS and its largest labor force members." State law requires 75 percent approval.
Teachers are upset that Mayor Rahm Emanuel canceled last year's raise and that they're being asked to work longer days without what they consider to be an adequate pay increase. Lewis said other key issues include class size and resources.
A strike wouldn't be called until the beginning of the next school year, but union leaders could do so without another vote. They say holding the vote now instead of later gives the union added leverage at the bargaining table. It also allowed 1,500 retiring teachers to vote.
"Our members ... were loud, serious and clear," Lewis said. "We want a contract that gives Chicago students the school they deserve. So we call on CPSs to take this process seriously and negotiate with us in good faith with an eye on the real prize, our children."
This will teach them to never disrepect labor.
ReplyDeleteReagan fired the air traffic controllers.
ReplyDeleteGotta be much easier to replace a CPS teacher than an air traffic controller.
No they just sleep on the job. Can teacher do that watching those bad kids
DeleteFiring them will "teach" them to never disrespect the tax PAYER !
ReplyDeleteI think collective bargaining for government should be banned. Just like the federal government . And tradesmen working for cty and cty shouldn't be be getting the prevailing wage. The prevailing wage was for tradesmen that could only work 9 or 10 months of the years. Then we get cty and cty tradesmen working year round. And then lots of them are getting time and a halk for overtime. This was never the intent. I'm sorry but the taxpayers are getting ripped off by such practices.
ReplyDeleteagree, and while your at it lift residency because the cost of living in chicago sucks!
DeleteThe cost of living in the decent suburbs are just as high as Chicago. Plus their property taxes are typically astronomical compared to Chicago's. And after all, if you are getting paid by the city you should have to contribute your taxes (at least some) back to the city that writes your check.. plus the city would be effectively decimated if they did that....and then the city cancer would just spread to your suburb anyway....No Strike and NO INCREASE in ANYONE'S PAY until the economy improves...you can't ask taxpayers who on average are making even LESS than you to give YOU a pay RAISE. It is the height of nerve !! All the while the results by the CPS are truly among the WORST results in the country....lucky you can still keep your jobs at all........in an actual market place most of you would be fired !!
DeleteHOW BOUT THE BOARD OF ED TEACHERS THAT GET PAID LOTS EXTRA AFTER THEY PRODUCE A PHD. I"M NOT TALKING A PHD FROM A LEGIT SCHOOL. I"M TALING A MAIL ORDER PHD. NOVA UNIVERSITY. SCAM SCAM SCAM
ReplyDeleteNobody seems to grasp any of the issues here. Emmanuel's plan (and that of his handpicked Board) is to gut the public school system, good and bad, in favor of schools run by private business. The majority of public schools left under the Emmanuel Plan will serve only those students who will not be acceptable to privately run schools -- the challenged, the behaviour problems, etc. Whatever teachers are left to service these students want to be in the best possible position. So taxpayers, get ready to be happy -- you're going to get what you want. No more paying for the public school system anymore, no more paying all those lazy teachers. Oh, and if the business running the school decides it's not profitable anymore and that it wants to run schools in India, well, that's the marketplace. What a great school system we will have then. Can't wait.
ReplyDeleteYou know, why don't we see any complaints against the police, against firemen? They are bound up in many of the same issues that teachers are: pension issues, pay (merit pay for police, why not?), and for firemen what exactly do we get for what we pay? Why not privatize firemen? You don't hear any complaints on this blog. Why? Is it because most teachers are women? Is it because many teachers are black? Just why is that??
