More confusion in the 35th legislative district!

Can someone tell me what is going on with our state rep position?
  • June, Kevin Joyce resigns his seat and moves with his family to Florida.
  • July, Democratic committeemen name Bill Cunningham as Joyce's replacement.
  • August, Democratic committeemen name John O'Sullivan as Joyce's replacement.
Who is Bill Cunningham and who is John O'Sullivan and why can't they work this out peacefully?

Here is a list of the people that appeared before the Dems and tried to get named to the post?
Bill Cunningham, Michael Cullen, John Presta, Thomas Condon, David Ladd, Connie Mixon, Richard Moran, Sheila Pacholski, John O'Brien, Thomas Carroll, Edward Smith, Maureen Kelly, John Fitzpatrick, Patrick O'Donnell, Randy Ashley and Kevin Butler and suburban residents Kent Oliven, Jerry Mulvihill, Ed Guzdziol, James Gierach, Addison Woodward, Ann Contorno and Robert Maloney.
Why didn't John O'Sullivan appear before the Dems to get the post? Why did the Dems appoint someone who didn't present his credentials to them? What are John O'Sullivan's credentials? Who are the Dems that were on the selection committee? I am putting  these questions to Committeeman O'Shea. We need answers.

You must admit that this has become weird. The confusion will probably cause even more people to go Repub in the fall.  The torch has been handed to our generation and our torchbearers are fumbling it.

Isn't O'Sullivan just a temporary place-keeper until the Democrats are defeated in November?

John O’Sullivan buys more Mike Madigan tickets and genuflects when the name Mike Madigan is mentioned in a conversation.

Off topic, but definitely related to the 19th Ward. Last night, two police officers shot (no serious injuries) at 77th and Hoyne. A check of the address where this occurred revealed that he homeowner paid a whopping $549.51 in taxes in 2009.

How much did you pay in taxes?

To the blog host; when will you understand it?
We the people HAVE NO VOICE, it is all an illusion. The Democratic Organization decides who becomes elected officials in this Ward, city and county.
no one really pays attention to the issues, we all go about our separate lives concerned mainly for our own life and then we bitch and moan about things when we wake up from our slumbers and look around and see how screwed up things are, but rather than go through the effort, pain and discomfort to fix things we just ignore it and vote for the same group of organization folks expecting a different outcome, only to go back to sleep once again.
It really is something else and no will ever change this. We are complacent and the cause of our self inflicted lack of action and result.

The person who thinks Rugai and O'Shea are quiet about the home invasions is totally out of touch. Who do you think gave the Southtown the story? That's the fastest way to notify people. The big papers don't usually bother with burglary reports. Maybe they will if the problem continues, but I think the person will be caught soon.

  12. Info below regarding recent home invasions

Activity started at 3:30 this morning. Around 5:30 the chase began with no capture as the offender went east and could not be found. They recovered the goods stolen from 3-4 homes before the last he was unsuccessful to enter. This all happened on Hoyne and 105th.

Home invasion on 105th and Hoyne. There must be 15 squad cars and 15 cops on foot with tasers and guns pulled looking for the guy.

    Dear Mayor Daley:

I was born and raised in Chicago. Your father was an honorable and good Mayor that deserved my vote. Unfortunately, unlike your father you have miserably failed.

Your father was a fiscal conservative that spent taxpayer money wisely. He cared about the citizens above all. Being a cop under your father was an honor if for no other reason he showed real concern for their welfare and safety.

Your father was no fan of gun rights but he took no steps to leave Chicagoans defenseless through gun bans. He brought free but unneeded gun registration and promised everyone it would not infringe further.

You have turned over the streets to armed criminals. That’s because you left the law-abiding defenseless by violating their Civil Rights to protect themselves under the Second Amendment.

Cops always used department provided ammunition to qualify on a firing range four times per year. If they had to shoot extra ammunition to qualify that was also provided.
Now you have police qualifying only once per year with a measly 30 rounds. That endangers the police and public. Additionally it creates liability issues potentially costing many millions of dollars.

Shoulder fired weapons are both easier to shoot and substantially more powerful. Under your leadership only the street thugs have these and but for few exceptions the police are miserably outgunned as a result.

By comparison, every police car in the state of California has both an M-4 carbine and a repeating .12 gage shotgun.

Under your father’s leadership there as many as 14,100 cops protecting the city. Today, even with the cooked manpower books there are substantially fewer.

Under your father’s direction all Chicago cops were bright, large and strong men. That changed with affirmative action and as intelligence testing was altogether eliminated. Instead dumber, weaker and much smaller cops were put in the trenches and that has impressed nobody especially dangerous criminals.

Under your woefully unqualified Superintendent more cops have been ambushed, killed or maimed despite wearing modern body armor. Your superintendent may have worked for the FBI but he never once patrolled the streets of a large city enforcing laws. In fairness, no police superintendent can keep a lid on violence under the Daley/Burke administration.

You have traded public safety for frivolous projects that Chicagoans did not want or need to feed you campaign contributors hundreds of millions of precious tax dollars. That, as you have turned taxation into an extortion program, that has chased vital business and productivity away.

As a direct result of your mismanagement and disastrous leadership the City of Chicago is so badly broken, the needed repairs will take many years.

Last night two more cops were gunned down and the body count keeps climbing. Instead of well armed and trained police you rely on cameras, computers and now summit meetings with dangerous criminals.

Law abiding Chicagoans must be allowed to protect themselves with firearms when they are outside of the safety and comfort of their own homes. Right now only well-armed criminals and marginally armed cops have any firearms at all.

The voters of Chicago need leaders that can enable employers and tourists to return to Chicago.

Mr. Mayor you need to walk away from City Hall and not look back. The city needs real leadership like your father once provided.

    Sincerely,

    Paul Huebl

Its worse than civil war. we are witnessing a complete failure of leadership. Cunningham and OSullivan are mere pawns in a chess game being played by higher ups.

The players? Hynes family-Rugai vs. Sheahan family-OShea. Hynes-Rugai is supporting OSullivan against Cunningham whose supported by Sheahan-OShea.

Its about preventing Cunningham from taking his seat early thus preventing him from having any seniority over anyone else including new state rep from Evergreen. its also about weakening Cunningham so that maybe he loses in Nov and then OShea can be dispatched to the political graveyard forever. That would open up the return of Dan hynes to take over as committeeman.

Dart is siding with Cunningham but that could change and the Joyces are siding with OSullivan and that wont change.

Several unknowns are out there. Count on OShea to get a few more people into the race in order to dilute Anne. Maybe more information about the june resignation. Some other stuff too.

Daley the 1st had unlimited federal resources to fund programs that left the police department with plenty of manpower. If you want to accurately track the dismantlement of the Chicago Police Dept, I'd stick my finger in the eye of former US Senator Charles Percy. He's the one who bro ugh federal judge Prentice Marshall to the dance. and if you want to know
Who really fucked up the Chicago Police department, ask your daddies about PrenticeMarshall. the Renault Robinsons and Howard Saffolds arrived soon after.

Why are all the politicians quitting and leaving office? If you ponder one thing ponder this, would you leave for no reason when you have position that has enriched you, your family and your friends with minimal work effort on your behalf, let’s be honest here they only “work” 10 hours a week. They have been in vacation mode on long beach, Michigan, Naples, NC etc. for the past few months showing up downtown only one day a month.
Are there indictments soon coming?, well it is common knowledge about the passing out of the Fire dept. LT test. And that a few were busted red handed by the Feds, The ones caught have been singing like a choir to avoid jail time and are naming names drawing the lines leading directly to the Pols.

Richard Moran is older than Ginger, so I guess he's not her son-in-law.

As for why people (Rugai) would retire - because that's what people in their 60s do. It's really not that mysterious.

If you were involved in anything, you would know that Ginger Rugai doesn't work a mere 10 hours a week.

Why doesn't Mount Greenwood have a self-organized community patrol? Can't you take action on your own behalf like other areas of the ward have done when they were concerned about crime?

In answer to the post, "So why have Beverly residents been warned of burglaries and home invasions but Mt Greenwood gets what kind of info/warning......? So what happened on 107 drake and I heard there was another one near by too? Oh wait, I live in Mt Greenwood, I can't get an answer to that": I'll give you an answer. People in Beverly created their own warning about burglaries through e-mails and facebook posts. They called their friends and relatives and went out of their way to inform each other. In their e-mail communication they provided FACTS that were provided from police reports - verifiable information. Residents of Beverly didn't come here to trash anyone. They were concerned because of a RASH of break-ins. The people on this blog told a sketchy story about ONE event that may have happened on 107th and Drake. Get off of this blog and do something constructive if you want your neighbors to know what happened near your homes. Visit the 22nd district and get concrete infomation that appears on police reports. If there aren't any police reports, then no one called the police. Don't just spread rumors on a website about what someone told you who heard it from someone else. Watch Beverly and see how it's done. Maybe you can learn something. The residents there are for and with each other. Some of the posters here demonstrate jealousy of and contempt for your neighbors. When Mount Greenwood creates a stronger sense of community, and it's YOUR job to do that if you live there, not your alderman's, you might see positive results.

It's not even possible for my alderman to make me miserable, no matter what he or she does. I have too many other positive things going on in my life, and whatever problems I have aren't attributable to a local politician - they're usually of my own making. Why would you give another person that much power? I have never heard such misery and despair, and I work solely with low-income minorities. That's saying a lot when they think they have it better than you do. Do something to make yourselves happy, and stop blaming the 19th ward for all of your troubles.

  35. Anonymous9/03/2010

There is a lot of political inbreeding going on here. The suggestion of the neighborhood (MTG)should get together and form a group who can gather verified information and share, is a crock. That is why we have elected officials, to look out for our best interests. They are also paid to keep us informed of dangerous situations or alerts. Why do we have elected officials if we must form our own neighborhood group to look out for ourselves? Beverly, we don't dislike you. We just don't like the fact that one neighborhood takes priority over another. It should be equal representation/protection under the law.

Here is the REAL prediction on how all of this will play out:
As far as our 19th ward democratic organization goes; we will win again and have our slated candidates win their elections because we work hard, our organization works hard and our supporters work hard.
All of the cry babies will stay home on Election Day anyway because; they are drunk, they are fat, they are uneducated, they are jealous cry babies, they are ungrateful for their positions on the: CPD, CFD, streets and sanitation, CPS and cook county careers, most of which they would never have those $50to $80-K positions if it were not for the hard work of the 19th ward Organization over the last 25 years. Most of us go to court rooms, accounting offices, higher education teaching positions or run our business. We don’t go to a civil servant job, get paid $80-K a year to drive in a car, sit outside a firehouse, hang out with my 5 other buddies watching one guy dig, or sit in a class room and have the summers off. Nearly ALL of these jobs you should say to yourself “I am lucky because in most cases I never went to college and yet I still make over $120-K a year with benefits total.”
But hey it’s easier to bitch about the 19th ward Organization and us folks who run it.
Once again say thanks and shut the hell up.
And to the 19th ward Democratic organization of which I am very proud, we have EARNED our positions!

It is not like the 50's and 60's when you went to the ward office to get a job after high school. There are only a few elite who get their promotions or job by who they know in politics or who they are related to left. Believe me, no one is staying home on election day. Where is the official information or police report about whatever you claim happened at 107th and Drake? Guess what? There isn't any. The elected officials do get involved and disseminate information WHEN THEY HAVE INFORMATION TO DISSEMINSATE. Your local leaders do keep you informed of dangerous situations when they have something to inform you of. How do you expect them to notify you of every single thing that happened or is rumored to have happened. They address the legitimate, VERIFYABLE crimes. Still, you think it's not your job to take a role. Ask any police officer - the first step to not being a victim of crime is to not provide the opportunity. That doesn't mean you could never be victimized; it just means you drastically reduce the likelihood. This is the first way that you can take a role in your own safety. The second way is to remain informed and not be willfully ignorant. Sitting on you ass trashing people on a blog isn't productive. While some of you were doing this, people in Beverly were mobilizing. Many of you rant about the segment of the population who take and take and take, and never do anything for themselves. Your actions (or inaction) reminds me of that same line of thinking, as in, "What are you going to do for me? I'm helpless and can't do anything to improve my own life. Everything I want and need must be given to me. If I don't get it I complain and whine and claim discrimination." The difference is that your claim is that it is Mount Greenwood that is being discriminated against. Who are these wealthy people you know who are living the American Dream without having lifted a finger? Most people I know have the same financial worries and fears of job loss, but here's a newsflash: spending years in school and thousands of dollars on college and graduate school tuition in order to provide yourself with more job opportunities isn't an example of sitting around having everything handed to you. Spend more time and energy taking initiative and you will likely see different results.

Mayor Richard Daley, The Beloved past assessor Tom Hynes, Danny Hynes, Michael Madigan, Alderman Rugai, Jerry Joyce, Kevin Joyce, Tom Dart, Michael Sheehan, Skinny Sheehan, Kathy Meaney, Rose Bilecki, Tom Ryan, Ed Harmening, the mayors of Oak lawn, Marionette park, Evergreen park, Worth township Democratic Party chair John O’Sullivan and many others: how can they all claim to be good catholics when they support abortion?

A lot of those politicians play both sides of the fence. Our biggest laugh was when I as a 19th ward member discovered how transparent Tom Hynes really was. When he is in Democratic National Party (executive committee) mode, he could kiss up to Bill Clinton and tell him what a great piece of legislation the 9 month abortion bill was. Then when he is in Quigley Seminary Reunion mode he can tell the priests, cardinals and classmates how terrible abortion in this country is.

As I’ve said before, Oldsmobile had a commercial years ago with the jingle "its not your father’s Oldsmobile". So many younger people today don’t realize "its not your grandfather’s Democratic Party".

Harry Truman and JFK would be Republicans today.

County board hopeful admits criminal conviction

An Orland Park man running for Cook County Board who has denied ever being in trouble with the law was in fact convicted at age 21 of beating a fellow student at Illinois State University.
Patrick Maher, 39, president of the Orland Fire Protection District and Democratic candidate for the 17th district seat on the county board, pleaded guilty in 1993 to a misdemeanor for attacking a male student in the early morning hours of Nov. 10, 1991, at the Wilkins Residence Hall, according to police and court records.
Maher has repeatedly denied he has a criminal background. He never previously disclosed the attack, his May 1993 felony charge nor his June 1993 criminal misdemeanor conviction for his role in the beating.
But today he acknowledged his criminal past with an e-mailed statement.
"Almost 20 years ago as college student, I got into an altercation with another student and later pled guilty to a misdemeanor charge resulting from the incident. I was deeply ashamed of my actions and learned some valuable lessons about personal responsibility," Maher wrote in the statement e-mailed to the SouthtownStar.
According to Illinois State University police reports, Maher and another man told investigators they went to the victim’s dorm room at 1:05 a.m. that Sunday morning in a quest to retrieve items belonging to Maher’s girlfriend, who had previously dated the victim.
An argument escalated into a fight, and the victim told police the man accompanying Maher wrestled him to the ground and Maher repeatedly punched him in the face, according to ISU police reports.
The victim, whom Illinois State University spokesman Jay Groves declined to name, sustained a “significant amount of physical trauma” and “head trauma” that led to memory loss, according to ISU police.
Maher aattended ISU in fall 1991, Groves said, and registered for spring 1992 classes but did not attend.
Maher was charged with aggravated battery in May 1993 for the November 1991 attack -- a felony -- but the charges were reduced to misdemeanor battery in June of that year, court records show. He was sentenced to two years of probation and 100 hours of community service.
As recently as February, Maher stated he had no criminal background in responses he submitted to the SouthtownStar in a questionnaire distributed to all candidates running for election.
When asked to explain his criminal background, including arrests, convictions and major traffic violations, he wrote, "None."
Maher's campaign spokesman Bob Denneen blamed the omission on a staffer, saying Maher did not personally fill out the candidate questionnaire.
"That's clearly a mistake and a regrettable one and an embarrassing one," he said. "That's a staffer typing up a questionnaire who made a mistake."
According to the McLean County Circuit Clerk Web site, Maher entered a guilty plea to misdemeanor battery on June 28, 1993.
"He's not hiding anything. This is out there. This is public record," Denneen said. "Pat got into a fight with another college kid. College kids get in fights. That's what happened."
Incumbent county Commissioner Elizabeth Doody Gorman, Maher's Republican opponent in November, declined comment on the matter today.

The real crime here is not the assault which occurred a long time ago. It's the attempted coverup by Mr. Maher when he failed to disclose this arrest and conviction to reporters and when he gave them an incorrect birthdate. This guy holds public office now? I call upon him to withdraw from the campaign and resign his elected office immediately. There are too many con men in public office now. He lied about his arrest, he will do or say anything in order to achieve an objective. He can't be trusted.
The other crime here is the attempt by the Hynes family to trick us into electing this creep. Why did they endorse him? Why did not alert the electorate? Another example of saying or doing anything. Damn you all.

Funny how 4 years ago I shared information that didn’t speak to highly of Hynes/Joyce or Gin Gin on the Sean Lowery blog. Almost all responses jumped all over me for being totally wrong and not mentioning how Hynes walks on water and Joyce turns water into wine etc.

Here we are 4 years later and most people sound as if they are enraged against the 19th ward.

Remember when I asked the question, "what would a good motto for the 19th ward be?"

I got mine you go get your own.
Heres a table scrap for you.
    You can go scratch.
Thats what only the closest of friends are for.

    My how things have changed

John O'Sullivan, (a Joyce guy) the newly elected Worth Township Dem. Committeeman was chosen by the districts committeeeman. Although they had said they would chose from those who "went through the interview process." That did not happen. O'Sullivan pushed his way in and has his eyes on another political office.

Cunningham,(an O'Shea/Sheahan guy) or whoever is advising him, turned down the appointment to fill Joyce's seat because he did not want to face the possibility of making a tough vote in Springfield this November regarding the budget which could result in a tax increase.
