Mike Joyce "The kids come first".
|
Boxing Coach |
Mike Joyce is the son of a pol and could have done anything with his life. What did he do? He went to law school and then put his legal career on hold so he could work with the kids. That was 12 years ago. He still spends every afternoon in the gym at Leo, working with the kids, saving them from something and making them into something. That says it all. He is a man we should all try to emulate at least one day a week.
Mike Joyce is smartest person I have ever met and I spent five days in the company of the great Steve Allen.
ReplyDeleteHe has a head the size of a Weber Kettle and the only thing bigger is the man's heart.
Hats off and a shot for Mister Joyce. You gotta volunteer something.
ReplyDeleteHe is so much like his dad. Maybe we can get him to run for alderman.
ReplyDeleteMike Joyce had coach me in high school and he served as my mentor. With his support, I was able to obtain a full scholarship to an Ivy League school. I grew up on the South Side of Chicago and with the assistance of Mike I was able to take the next step in life. Mike Joyce made me a better professional and most importantly a better man. His intelligence and ability to make kids realize that there's more to life than streets, drugs gangs, and negativity are second to none. We actually need more people like Mike Joyce in the City of Chicago.
ReplyDeleteAkeem
Mike and John Collins trained when I won the golden gloves. He now has David Diaz and Emanuel Steward working with me for my pro debut. Mike helps beyond belief in everything he does.
ReplyDeleteHi Hope Pickle would run for alderman.
ReplyDeleteMike Joyce has raised a lot of money for fireman, police and children cancer charity. Much of his work goes unknown.
ReplyDeletei am a police officer and several of us work out at celtic boxing. we help mike in anyway we can to help the youth he mentors. truly a man with a heart of gold. he also lets us train for free when ever we want., understanding the dangers of our job. tommy r. 11th district.
ReplyDeleteMy son has been training at the gym with Mike along side other neighborhood kids. It's been a tremendous experience for my son !! Kudos to Mike
ReplyDeletethis is what leaders are made of.
ReplyDeleteI work out at mikes gym along with other police officers. The training is fantastic! All mike asks in return from us is to mentor and try to lead some troubled children in the right direction. Offer advice when possible. Not only is it fun working with these kids it gives us an opportunity to give a little back in the community which is all he wants. Thanks mike and I wish there were more good souls out there like yourself.

I am African American police offier who lives in the 19th ward and works out of the 022ns district. My son who is a colleg soph and I often train at the Celtic boxing gym, along side with other police, firemen and neighborhood kids. Its is a positive atmosphere and everybody gets along.
ReplyDeleteMike does a great with all kids.
Murph, I don't need any credit for doing something I love. I get just as much out of working with the kids as they do. I love the sport and I get a million laughs every day. I got to travel all over the world on account of boxing and meet many interesting people, including my wife who happens to hate boxing. I got to work corners with Hall of Fame trainers Angelo Dundee and Emanual Steward. I gotta give all credit to my first trainer Owen Putman for introducing me to boxing, my friend and first boxing idol "Irish" John Collins who helps me train the kids, the late great Herman Mills and most of all my pro trainer Marty McGarry. Marty had so much patience with me and has done so much for others. He is the one who taught me to give back. Through boxing fundraisers we have raised quite a bit of money for worthy causes with some hootspa from jerry Elsner. RIGHT NOW THOUGH MARTY McGARRY NEEDS OUR HELP. Marty has a deadly hereditary disease which requires expensive experimental medication available only in Portugal. On December 2nd at Bourbon Street we are having a fundraiser Fight for Marty McGarry. Could you please help us get the word out for this most wonderful human being. Thanks, Mike Joyce
ReplyDeletep.s. Boy is my head fat in that picture.
As a close friend of Mike's for over 20 years I have witnessed first hand how selfless Mike is. He has always found the time to help the person in need. Keep up the great work Mike, the world would be a much better place if more people spent time helping others the way Mike has for so many years !!!
ReplyDeletePickle Joyce would make a great Alderman! He knows everybody in the ward and has probably helped 99% of them at one time or another. A class guy with a 100% 19th Ward pedigree.
ReplyDeleteIve known Mike for over fifteen years. Ive known him to help a lot of neigbhborhood and non neighborhood kids. He trains Chicago police and firemen for the Battle of the Badges and keeps his gym open to them free of charge. Hes been recognized by Leo Alumni for his work at the school and has reached out to others to help too. Its pretty pimpy to take pot shots from the peanut gallery and call yourself anonymous or use some goofy code name to make someone look bad. Mike is a great neighborhood guy-Jack O'Keefe
ReplyDeleteMike also runs the Celtic Boxing club on 111th St.I took my four boys there over a year ago, that first evening they were very nervous about joining a new sport with people they had never met before.Their fears were unfounded, they loved it and I loved the confidence and discipline they developed from working with Mike,in a gym full of more experienced boxers he took the time to work with each one and develop their skills. They now have fought in two exhibition tournements and are yearning for more.
ReplyDeleteMike volunteers his time to coach these kids as well as raise his family and run his law firm.God must have given him more hours in his day than the rest of us.
Mike is an outstanding man! He is as solid as a rock, a true loyal friend a regular humble neighborhood guy.
ReplyDeleteScott 011 district.
Mike Joyce coach me at Leo high school he is great person and even better friend if it wasn't for Mike lord knows what I'll be doing with my life. Thank you for everything Mike
ReplyDeleteI had the pleasure of meeting Mike Joyce at the Cook County Clerks victory party back in March of 2012. Since then I have had the opportunity of working with one of the up most important professionals in Chicago. From his volunteer training at Leo High school and his professional work experience with the local community. His relationship with professional sports celebrities like Angelo Dundee and Emanuel Steward to his taking in the elderly Herman Mills in his final days. It has been a great to work with Mike on his Celtic Boxing Club project. I am honoured to help with the development of the site and continuing to work with his efforts.
ReplyDeleteMike is a stand up guy and if America was half as generous as he is we all would be better off nation.

ReplyDeletePickle is the kind of guy we need in the aldermans chair. He would reviltize 95th and western too and stop these gang funerals from going through the neighborhood. I think he can do a real good job.
ReplyDeleteYou heard it here, there is no doubt Mike Joyce is running for alderman next time. We need him.
ReplyDeleteIf he will bring back commuter service on the Grand Trunk RR, I will vote for him. We need that stop at 111st reopened.
ReplyDeleteBefore becoming a Chicago Police officer. Mike Joyce trained me in boxing working as a mentor in my life. After joining the Police department Mike has continued to allowed myself and co-workers to work at his gym for free. He is a true supporter of youth and the law enforcement community. Chicago needs more men like Mike Joyce.

Mike is the REAL DEAL! With Mike what you see is what you get, his word is what he is. Mike has not only guided Leo kids to a productive life he has with his work with the Police Athletic League of Illinois helped kids from all over the state reach for that brass ring. Mike has helped our kids get jobs, make it through school, helped them develop a sence of self esteem and even in some cases provided them free legal assistance, in turn Mike has NEVER ACCEPTED ONE PENNY FOR HIS WORK!
ReplyDeleteOur world is not only a better but a way more fun place because Mike Joyce has been here.
I truly hope Mike runs for alderman. The 19th ward needs a leader like Mike. Mike beats to his own drum-takes orders from no one.
DeleteMike always does the right thing. He is afraid of no one, no how and no never.
DeleteThey should call Picks gym the real Ward office he is the only one helping people in the neighborhood and getting things done
ReplyDeleteI am a close friend of Mike Joyce and have known him scene grammar school. I have worked very close with Mike the past year with fundraising and numerous other jobs in his legal office and gym. Not only is he compassionate person and loves what he does he makes a difference in our world. I have seen Mike in many occasions make next to nothing on a case’s, because he cares about his clients in spite of their ability to pay. When Mike Joyce does anything in his life it’s because he wants to make a difference. Mike is the most unselfish, devoted, caring, professional person I have ever met. I am proud to have worked closely with Mike this past year, and I can’t wait to see in future years to come, how many more lives he changes and makes a difference! Katie Corbett
ReplyDeleteP.S. They could have chosen a better picture of you! You got my vote Mike for aldermen!!!!
I want to hear more about the commuter service om the Grand Trunk RR. When did they take it out?
ReplyDeleteMurph, it's great to see you recognizing Mike for all he does for the kids at Leo HS and the Celtic boxing club. Mike has shared his talents and time to make a positive difference in countless kids in our community and at Leo HS. He is rightly applauded for his generous contributions.

Knowing Mike my whole life, I can confidently say what a class act he is. He has been a friend to my family for years, and continues to do so by coaching my young nephews. Mike is an unselfish individual who doesn't put himself first in matters of kids or re neighborhood
