We've been at war with Iran since the first second of the siege and capture of the US Embassy in Tehran.
Since then, they've attacked our ships in international waters, fired missiles and cannon at our ships, through proxies fired missiles and mortars at US personnel in the region. Through proxies they've set off car bombs in and around US personnel. Directly and through proxies they've kidnapped and killed US citizens in the Middle East.
All of those are very valid reasons to strike back.
Iran has always said that once they get The Bomb that they'll use said bombs on the Great and Lesser Satans. That would be the US and Israel. If they don't use ballistic missiles (launched from ships to hit the US) then they'll use vehicle (trucks or ships) to carry them into the Satans.
And Iran has no issue doing ground strikes with the nukes, which creates a poop-ton of radioactive debris, far more than even an airburst at 1,000 feet.
Again, they've been at war with us since 1979.
And some of our presidents, Carter, Clinton, Obama and Biden (or whomever was doing the actual thinking and action for Biden) literally paid for Iran's nuclear program. They never learned the lesson President Thomas Jefferson learned, that fundamentally there is no appeasement with islam. Jefferson authorized military action against the Barbary Pirates after they said they were always in conflict with not-islam (the Dar-al-Harb, the land of war.) So, well, millions for defense, not one cent or tribute, and the US Navy and Marine Corps kicked the ever-loving dogsnot out of said Barbary Pirates (that whole Shores of Tripoli. 40 US Marines and some natives put the stonk on Tripoli.
