NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees on Thursday defended his participation in a video that was released by the religious organization Focus on the Family, a group that is widely recognized as anti-LGBTQ.

Focus on the Family has, among other things, promoted “conversion therapy,” a radical pseudoscientific practice that aims to change an LGBTQ person’s sexual orientation. Brees drew criticism in the days following the release of the video because of its connection to the organization.

Thursday, in front of his locker, Brees strongly defended himself. He released a video statement shortly

Antonio Brown unhappy over new fine, posts YouTube video of apparent Jon Gruden call
And here you thought that the Antonio Brown story would calm down once the Oakland Raiders said he could play in Week 1.

Not with this saga. The latest turn comes from Ed Werder of ESPN, who reported that the Raiders fined Brown for the argument he had with general manager Mike Mayock during Wednesday’s practice. The Raiders leaked they were considering suspending Brown over the incident, but never followed through with that after he apologized.

Brown isn’t happy with the latest fine according to a source, Werder said. That should sound familiar. And then came a new YouTube video from Brown.

Jussie Smollett lawyers: Even if actor faked attack, cops didn’t need to investigate it so vigorously

SNEED EXCLUSIVE: The ex-”Empire’’ actor’s latest court filing, while not admitting he staged the incident, pins the decision to spend so much money on the police probe squarely on law enforcement.
Jussie Smollett leaves court after charges were dropped earlier this year.Ashlee Rezin/Sun-Times
This is it.
Jussie Smollett is smokin’.
The actor, once a star of the hit-TV series “Empire,” is making one last attempt to get a city lawsuit against him tossed out of federal court before it proceeds to trial.
Sneed learned exclusively that late Tuesday night, his attorneys filed a motion responding to the city’s claim that he should pay the city more than $130,000 to cover police overtime and other costs.
The city claims the costs were incurred in connection with an investigation into a report he filed claiming he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack in River North. Police later charged Smollett with staging the attack.
Attorneys for Smollett deny the actor made up the attack, and note charges were ultimately dropped by Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx.
“My client from the beginning has maintained his innocence and disputed the city’s allegations,” said William J. Quinlan, of The Quinlan Law Firm, who filed the motion. He noted that “it’s going to be very difficult for the city to prevail in making a case my client should pay for overtime for a case ultimately dismissed by the state’s attorney.
“It’s ridiculous and a stretch to require him to do so.”
But the latest court filing contends even if Smollett did make a false report, there is no way the city can assert he would have known the city would investigate — and investigate it to the extent cops did.
“We contend the city is wrong,” Quinlan said of the city’s assertion that Smollett should have known the city would spend nearly 2,000 hours investigating. “ ... The mere fact somebody filed a police report doesn’t presume the investigation will be done and certainly not to the extent of what the city is claiming.
“Smollet has no control over that,” Quinlan added.
In the legal brief, obtained by Sneed, Smollett makes clear that he is not admitting he made false statements. “Mr. Smollett disputes any and all assertions that he made a false statement and was not a victim of a crime,” a footnote on the first page of the motion reads.
But even if he did, “The filing of a police report, in and of itself, does not necessitate a sprawling investigation nor does it, as a practical matter, usually result in an investigation as extensive as the one the CPD chose to undertake in this case,” the motion says.
“ ... The City has failed to allege that Mr. Smollet was similarly ‘well aware’ that his statements to police would result in 1,836 hours of police overtime, or any other reasons why he should have known this would have been the case.”
Last month, U.S. District Judge Virginia Kendall said she will rule in October on whether the city could move forward with its lawsuit to redeem the costs.
Smollett, who has always maintained his innocence, has been spending his time traveling between San Francisco and New York, where he has hung out with pals from the Fox series. And he recently spent time with singer Janet Jackson in Las Vegas.
While Quinlan believes the lawsuit should be thrown out, he puts the impetus for its filing not on city attorneys but on then Mayor Rahm Emanuel.
“This lawsuit was only filed by the former mayor ... out of frustration for the state’s attorney dismissing the charges,” said Quinlan.
How will this end?
No prediction here.
This case has had more twists than bag of Twizzlers.

A depressing Labor Day message

Screen Shot 2019-08-30 at 11.31.18 AM
By John F. Di Leo
First, the state of Illinois’ new governor signed a record number of tax and regulatory increase bills in Springfield, and then Chicago’s new mayor delivered a State of the City address announcing her plans to do the same to Chicago.
It’s been a good week for the tax collector, the political hack and the bureaucrat; it’s been a bad week for everyone else.
As statewide progressive income taxes - and many other forms of property grabs - loom large on the horizon, the message is clear to any Illinoisan with a house, a job, a business, a bank account, or in fact anything of value at all:
Get Out.
Get out now.
Get out while you still can.

Every household in Illinois has a six-figure debt from pensions alone, and there’s only one

Now, the last cop still facing disciplinary action in the high-profile case is arguing he shouldn’t be punished — and that Daley’s nephew never should have been charged by a special prosecutor.
Sgt. Sam Cirone and four others involved in the investigation have testified to the Chicago Police Board, which will decide Cirone’s fate.
And all agreed: Daley’s nephew shouldn’t have been charged.
