Body found in Columbus Circle manhole had been there two weeks, chewed up by rats
An apparently drunken man stumbled into an open manhole near Columbus Circle — and he was found two weeks later on Tuesday so badly decomposed and chewed up by rats that cops couldn’t even tell his race.
The grisly discovery was made around 3:20 a.m. when a Verizon utility worker climbed into the hole at West 58th Street and Eighth Avenue and found the body laying face up on top of wiring.
Surveillance video from Sept. 30 shows the seemingly intoxicated man walking clumsily through barriers around the manhole at 2:30 a.m., and tumbling down into the open hole, police sources told The Post.
Hours later workers returned, removed the barriers and put the manhole cover on the opening — never looking down the hole where the man fell.
Workers returned this week and found his decomposed remains.
Police sources said the man had been partially eaten by rats by the time he was found, and described the stench as “unbelievable.”
