The shame of it all.

I am going to publish some articles about alcohol abuse. Yes, alcohol. The drug that has laid waste to our neighborhood and our culture. Imagine where we could be without it? Each of us know several people with the problem.
Alcohol abuse means having unhealthy or dangerous drinking habits, such as drinking every day or drinking too much at a time. Alcohol abuse can harm your relationships, cause you to miss work, and lead to legal problems such as driving while drunk (intoxicated). When you abuse alcohol, you continue to drink even though you know your drinking is causing problems.
If you continue to abuse alcohol, it can lead to alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence is also called alcoholism. You are physically or mentally addicted to alcohol. You have a strong need, or craving, to drink. You feel like you must drink just to get by.
You might be dependent on alcohol if you have three or more of the following problems in a year:
  • You cannot quit drinking or control how much you drink.
  • You need to drink more to get the same effect.
  • You have withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking. These include feeling sick to your stomach, sweating, shakiness, and anxiety.
  • You spend a lot of time drinking and recovering from drinking, or you have given up other activities so you can drink.
  • You have tried to quit drinking or to cut back the amount you drink but haven't been able to.
  • You continue to drink even though it harms your relationships and causes physical problems.
Alcoholism is a long-term (chronic) disease. It's not a weakness or a lack of willpower. Like many other diseases, it has a course that can be predicted, has known symptoms, and is influenced by your genes and your life situation.

How much drinking is too much?

Alcohol is part of many people’s lives and may have a place in cultural and family traditions. It can sometimes be hard to know when you begin to drink too much.
You are at risk of drinking too much and should talk to your doctor if you are:1
  • A woman who has more than 3 drinks at one time or more than 7 drinks a week. A standard drink camera is 1 can of beer, 1 glass of wine, or 1 mixed drink.
  • A man who has more than 4 drinks at one time or more than 14 drinks a week.

Will say or do ANYTHING to get a vote.

What is this chick thinking? What about just enforcing the law?
Instead of defending and enforcing Illinois' marriage laws, Cook County state's attorney Anita Alvarez has her violating her oath of office by joining a suit brought against the state by the ACLU attempting to make Illinois's DOMA law unconstitutional. If successful, Alvarez will be able to overturn marriage between a man and a woman without having to prove a single legal point before a court of law. This is an outrageous "end run"around the will of the people and must be stopped. Illinois Review

SSA TAX MEETING TONIGHT

Protect Mt. Greenwood
Ald. O'Shea is having a meeting of all concerned residents tonight at St. Xavier U. McGuire Hall. 6:00 PM.

His proposal is for a real estate tax surcharge on all of the commercial and residential real estate on 111th St from Sacremento to Central Park and north on Kedzie to 110th St. The surcharge will be be about 8% during the first year but can go as high as 25% during following years.  The average Chicago SSA charges about 17% per year.

The money is going to be used for the "beautification" of  111th and Kedzie.

If you are concerned that this new tax may put additional strain upon the small businesses that line 111th st, you are right. Their very existence could hinge upon this tax. If you care about 111th st, be at this meeting and ask questions and demand answers.

SSA Tax

It seems that Ald. O'Shea is proposing a tax on the Mt. Greenwood residents so the city can plant flowers at 111th and Kedzie. People are not happy. I thought that project was all paid for. This plan sounds half baked.

A tax proposal during a recession? Sounds like an Obama proposal.

Running Excels

My New Shoes
Check this place out. Running Excels @ 10328 S. Western Ave. I went in there Sat morning to buy a pair of running shoes. The owner put incredible effort into measuring my feet and the way I run. He has a large selection and the price is cheaper than anything you will find at a mall. This place offers a great value.

Illinois Pension Calamity

Illinois Governmental Pension Obligations
The events of the past few days show me that the political parties may not be capable of coming up with a workable solution. If that is in fact what happens, we are looking at a calamity necessitating a state bankruptcy filing sometime in the next few years. The state will probably take all of the pension obligations (state, county, city, park district, fire district, schools, etc, etc, etc and throw them into the lap of a US bankruptcy judge. That judge will make everyone take the 40 to 50% haircut necessary to make the system work and that will be the end of the crisis. But it will also be the end of many things like cities, villages, counties, park districts, fire protection districts. The same thing happened in New York City in the 1890's.  Chicago is going to have metropolitan government run by a Federal judge, not idiots.

Time is running out. I am told that Quinn will soon call everyone back to Springfield in a last ditch attempt to avoid meltdown. Drop dead date is June 2013.
