South Side Parade

What is going on with the South Side Parade? Are they having it? I sure hope so.

Hate to say it, but I hope that they do not have it.

I was in it or at it for every year it was there minus the four years I was overseas in the Army.

I do not like what it had become and I did not like the AA cops hooking up, locking up or ANOV'ing all the "whiteys" while they (CPD) NEVER did anything at any of the AA parades or Rican fest.

IMHO, it got out of hand and until they can come up with assurances that it will not become the same thing again, leave it be.

no money, they spent all of it on the $485,000 wheelchair ramp at city call.

IF they have this parade or not will be the true test of Skinnys power.

We lost the parade to the puking, obnoxious, outdoor defecating teenage/early 20's college crowd years ago. I too loved the parade and all it once stood for - but many families in the 19th Ward were not sorry to see the end of using our neighborhood as a virtual toilet for the travelling bands of hedonists who descended on our neighborhood like a plague. The stories of true debauchery abound. unless Skinny Sheahan can promise hundreds of cops - and unless parents can control their little puking brats, I say with a sad Irish heart - good riddance.

To all of you 19th ward blowhards requesting the parade, GET OVER IT! The parade is gone with good reason, so find something else to do on that day.

On March 24, 2009, the South Side Irish Parade Committee voted to discontinue the parade citing issues of public safety and crowd control. Since then, many have discussed resurrecting this once great, family-friendly parade. My position on this event has never changed; I could not in good conscience support the return of the South Side Irish Parade until the Parade Committee can implement a proper public safety plan to prevent rowdy, drunken, and often violent behavior that has become synonymous with the parade in recent years. Moreover, I have argued that parade organizers should reimburse the City for the $300,000 in services and police protection associated with this two hour event. In the past, these expenses have been almost exclusively shouldered by the taxpayers.

Last week, members of the Parade Committee shared with me their public safety plan and budget for reviving the parade this year. Unfortunately, the safety plan they offered was not a detailed, strategic proposal authored by a professional security consultant. Rather, they submitted a single sheet of paper that listed roughly a dozen bullet points aimed at establishing a "zero tolerance policy" for open alcohol at the event. Seeking guidance from the law enforcement community, I shared this plan with several police officials. Each raised several valid concerns. Our conclusion is that this plan is well-intentioned, but terribly insufficient and very difficult to execute.

Given the committee's failure to submit a comprehensive security plan, I sent the attached letter to Mayor Emanuel formally requesting the permit application be denied for 2012. On January 12th, I was informed that the Department of Transportation had issued the permit over my objection and despite serious public safety concerns. I firmly disagree with the city's position on this matter; the first duty of any government body is to ensure the safety and well-being of its residents. Past parades have seriously jeopardized the safety of our community.
Moving beyond the overwhelming public safety concerns, this parade becomes even more difficult to justify in light of the $300,000 cost to the taxpayers. To address a $635 million dollar budget deficit, the City has closed mental health centers and police stations, raised water rates, reduced library hours, and laid off 9-1-1 operators; how then can we possibly justify spending $300,000 on a two hour parade?

Moving forward, I have asked that the Department of Transportation, Chicago Police Department, and South Side Irish Parade Committee hold a public meeting to hear from residents about past problems and explore potential solutions. The parade committee has pledged to do everything in their power to hold a safe and successful event. If appropriate solutions cannot be found, I would hope the parade committee would forgo a 2012 parade.

As Alderman, I will work to ensure that the Parade Committee and city government will be held accountable for the responsibilities they have agreed to assume in staging a parade. If you have questions or concerns you wish to raise in advance of the public meeting, please contact the Chicago Department of Transportation at (312) 744-4652 or Michael.Simon@ex.cityofchicago.org. Otherwise, I will notify the public when a meeting has been scheduled.

    Thank you,

    Matt O'Shea
    Alderman, 19th Ward

What does this mean? Are we having the parade or not? I cannot believe that Mr. O'Shea wrote the about letter. What does it mean?

The alderman can deny the permit and that should be the end of it. The Police also say no and thats it. This letter from the alderman is a profile as if he does not want it. All he needs to do is say no and its over. Believe me I worked in Special Events if he says no its no.

Matt Oshea should be complemented for saying yes. A good move. Also, I think Skinny Sheahan should be acknowledged for his efforts to bring the parade back. Thanks Skinny.

The 19th ward is one of the few wards that actually pays taxes, so once the organizers of the Bud Billiken parade pay the city for thier police services, which has double the amount of police officers, I see absolutely no reason why the SSI organizers should have to pay anything.

    Hey, Alderman....

You gonna make sure that the shitheads pay for Bud Billiken and the Puerto Ricans pay for their parade/festival too?

Sadly, it is back on. That is what this all means. Skinny had more pull than Matt, that is what the back issue is.
What does it mean to me?
It means that i will be calling the police for ANY and EVERY little thing that I see wrong, EVERYTHING. I hope to ruin as many drunk, ignorant, non locals as I can on the day of the parade.
I honestly think that the parade was headed for a fatality at some point and I would not be surprised if it happens sooner than later. How many DUI's, domestics and batteries were covered up or kept hush hush by the police in the past? Look for it to get worse, not better, with the mentality of the people who will flock back to act like they are in high school once again.

The entire neighborhood needs to dwell on the positive aspects of this parade. What it means to be Irish American in a city which is still very great. Lets think about the reasons our ancestors left Ireland and what they were seeking. Lets think about how we have benefited from the efforts of all those before us.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's team announced Thursday that the May summit meetings of world leaders will cost up to $65 million, downtown Chicago will remain open amid security restrictions and protest rules will be revised following complaints they were too strict.

The first glimpse of what it will take to stage the G-8 and NATO gatherings came at a City Hall briefing conducted by Emanuel aides and the private organizing group he picked to lead the city's efforts. The setup provides Emanuel a measure of distance from any potential problems with the large events that could attract thousands of demonstrators to Chicago and inconvenience residents and commuters alike.

Emanuel aides have promised for weeks to provide details of how the city will make good on the mayor's pledge to showcase Chicago to the world — including how the costs will be covered. But the Washington-style background briefing — used by government officials to provide information without attribution — left many questions unanswered. The mayor did not attend.

In an interview with the Tribune after the briefing, Lori Healey, executive director of the private G-8/NATO host committee, estimated the cost will be between $40 million to $65 million.

But she did not break down how the money will be spent, other than to give the broad parameters of public safety, marketing and social events. The city will be reimbursed through federal grants and private donations, according to Healey.

"We are developing those budgets right now," Healey said. "We're building it. We've got four months to develop this plan."

The particulars come less than a week before the City Council is expected to vote on Emanuel's request for blanket authority to spend money on the summits and for new restrictions on demonstrations.

Aldermen also were privately briefed on the summit preparations by Healey, city Corporation Counsel Steve Patton and Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Felicia Davis, along with a Secret Service agent.

Emanuel has handed many of the hosting duties for the summits to World Business Chicago, his hand-picked group of top business executives that functions as an economic development arm of the city. The WBC, which is funded in part with taxpayer money, controls the host committee and will be in charge of raising private donations to pay for some portion of the summit costs. Healey said the committee will disclose summit donors sometime this year, but how much individuals contributed will not be disclosed until a year after the summit.

As many as 7,500 delegates representing up to 80 countries are expected to attend the back-to-back summits May 19-21, according to event organizers. The summits will be held at the McCormick Place convention center and most of the dignitaries and their delegations are expected to stay downtown.

OSHEA BALKS ABOUT THE $300,000 COST OF THE SS PARADE YET HE WILL VOTE TO SPEND $65 MILLION FOR G-8. WHO ARE HIS PEOPLE? US OR THEM? IS HE COMPLAINING ABOUT THE G-8 COST? NO. GROW SOME BALLS.

Maloney is the smartest if you are gauging his intelligence on how many pension checks get cashed in the Maloney household ! In my view he is a total sellout! And regarding O'Shea- it takes alot of guts to oppose the parade than to support it! There is hope with O'Shea - please tell him if you see him that it was a good decision if you think so! After all they are all pols - and do want approval to some degree!

why was the neighborhood as a whole not able to vote(special election) for this stupid parade not to happen...I'm sure there are more residents that DON'T want the parade . Isn't it OUR neighborhood??? We should have had the right to say NO!!!!---now you have all the idiots coming from all over to damage and disrupt our lives for a day of drunkenness. There is no way they will control this thing again...VERY SAD!!!!!

In regards to the South Side Parade, why would the City Department of Transportation override the alderman? I would think if the alderman of the ward did not support the parade- the parade should be a no go. We elected the alderman to protect our best interests, not a bunch of hacks down at City Hall, tavern owners on Western Ave, or store owners who sold 10 tons of corned beef.

We've lived half-a-block off of the parade route since 1995. We've always had a great time, and have had zero problems with anyone. We rent a port-a-potty for those who need it. We've actually had more problems with 4th of July celebrations than anything else.

The best interests of the neighborhood include tavern owners and the folks at County Fair.

I wish Alderman O'Shea would get in the habit of answering his emails. Durbin does. Lipinski does. Monique does. Why doesn't O'Shea? Maybe he learned from Rugai.
